Quick question, collecting my son’s 21st Sub from Goldsmiths today. I want him to wear and enjoy and can see they offer a 3 or 5 year accident and damage insurance. Any reviews or alternatives?

Thanks

He's a lucky lad. How long was the wait for one from goldsmiths?

Ha, he wishes !

Second Rolex in the family, first was my wife’s Datejust 41mm in 2019. This was around 12months. Have a 126610 on order for the other son and that’s gonna be a longer wait for sure.

I got 5 years Goldsmith’s care for £800. It allows loss at Uni, accidental and everything else in between. That was with some bartering. Not cheap, but it’s designed to get him to wear it and not feel it must be an ornamental keepsake. He has gone out to pitch and putt wearing it, which made my wife and I really chuffed. If he wants to collect some later (with his money),great, our gift is a daily.

They are coming through, and you might get that call sooner than you think.

The sub date I asked for has arrived but I cannot collect until next weekend unless I can juggle things about.

Really looking forward to collecting.

Hopefully the one you have ordered arrives in time for your sons 21st.

Do you still get the extended 5 year warranty from the WoS Group on a new Rolex?

considering this is the rolex experts' thread now...

my deepsea is just over 10 years old now. Is the general view that it should be taken to a rolex service centre or is there some kind of better option?

Depends how much lube you have.

I had my daughter's datejust serviced at Rolex Kings Hill late last year and the cost was about £750 including a new crystal. They did it within 3 weeks. I obtained a quote from an independent and the saving was minimal

I’m of the if it ain’t broke don’t fix it crowd , but when it stopped a few years ago , I got a quote off the local recommended watch repairers and it was marginally dearer than Rolex .

Had my bimetal DJ36 serviced by Rolex approx 8 years ago. Took nearly 4 months before I saw it again and cost about £650.
Just had a minor repair and again a full service done by a grey dealer. Was away a week and cost me £250 all in.
The only real difference was it came back clean and shiny from Rolex where as I needed to give it a wash when back from the grey dealer.
I would go independent again though with those savings for my DJ.
HOWEVER my Skydweller would go to rolex as I know it's a far more complex watch and the gold case would damage a lot easier.

Had my GMT batgirl serviced recently with the grey dealer I bought it new from in '19. Costs the same as with AD, 550ish, no polishing, only lube and maintenance.
It was the first Rolex ever I had where the lube dried out (the watch didn't keep time and stopped altogether in the end). Watch was brand new, worn 24/7 for the last 4,5 years. Dealer told me that Rolex changed the lube and the oil in its watches, so to generate a service every 3 - 5 years.
I had mostly GMTs and Subs from the 70s and 80s, the odd Daytona and SD in between, longest for 10 years and never had a problem with dried lube...
Is that the begin of a downward spiral like with cars, where the initial product seems to be better than the outgoing one (the bracelets and clasps definitely are), but where hidden things because of costs are not that long lasting anymore?

Out of interest, if I walked into a Rolex boutique or a jewellers that sells Rolex and said, 'hello, I'd like to buy a new black dial Submariner date version please,' what response can I expect to be met with?
