My C6 Z06 imported from Germany had a rather nice sub-£200p.a. road tax as it was imported.

Does that still apply today?

If so, that must add up to a considerable running cost saving over an official UK car!

Cool, but how recently were your cars imported? Does anyone know for sure these are still the rules?

Yes as long as its not a european speck car. for example the new 2010 camaro which from next month you can by from a chevy dealer over here will be a european speck car so road tax will be about £450-500 a year yet a import will be £205,make sure its not european.

So is that a recent change then? Because, as I said, my Z06 was a German Euro Spec car and that still paid only the £190 road tax. I brought it over to the UK (new) in 2006.

Thinking potentially about doing the same for a Camaro sourced from Germany as they have more choice over there and the exchange rate is sliding back in our favour again slightly.

If it has to go through an IVA test it'll be subject to cheap road tax which is now £205

Well my Euro spec Z06 didn't need an IVA as it already had an EU Certificate of Conformity, but it still had the cheap road tax.

As I said, it was bought from Germany where it was an official EU car.
Back in 2006, the exchange made it much cheaper than buying a UK car.

And it possibly had the equivalent of IVA/Sva. Hence low road tax.

Dodge UK brought in some official Ram trucks at a similar time and despite the fact you could buy them from a franchised dealer they still had to be SVA tested and benefit from reduced road tax.

It was an official German import, i.e. supplied (originally) by a GM dealer in Germany. So I doubt it had or needed an SVA/IVA or equivalent.

But I suspect that when bringing it into the UK, they don't recognise any CO2 ratings outside of the UK, so don't know which band to tax it in.

If that still applies, then it is hundreds of pounds a year cheaper to run an EU import than an official UK car even though it's still covered by the 3 year european wide warranty (unlike a US import).

Interesting.

UK road tax is £445 Import is £185 at the moment I think labour added something in budget a few years ago as I know all cars from march that are 2001 onwards will be taxed on C02 for the RFL bandings. I am sure Imports will increase too

Yeah the loophole seems to exist because the DVLA don't recognise any foreign ratings for CO2, so don't know how much to charge.
Long may that last!

The road fund cost is not about emissions as they would have us believe. I have a 6litre v12 Aston £205 a Lightning £205 a Murcielago which if it was a year earlier would also be £205. No logic to it that I can see.

Aston is 2004 Lightning also 2004 and Lamborghini built 2005, reg 2007 so it costs £400 but would be £205 and I also have a 1978 Firebird which also costs £205 and came from Holland 25 years ago.
