Hi all,

Recently been looking at older dodge rams, around the 1994-1997 age. prefer the shorter variety for parking as its tight where i live :0 so best option would be single cab 6ft bed.

Is it at all possible for a 1500 slt magnum 5.2 v8 to average 24mpg ? i am guessing not haveing read some people getting as low as 10mpg !

I asked for an honest mpg from the owner of one for sale and he reckons 24mpg, i know he probably is trying to make it more appealing as he wants to sell but just thought i would ask for input from people that have actually owned one, not just hearsay wink

Thanks in advance

you're not going to average anything like that, you might get into the twenties on a long run at 55 to 60mph but round town you're gonna be mid teens

I know a chap with a recent-ish 1500 Hemi. It's got a version of the hemi which closes the input valves on 4 of the cylinders when it's on a low throttle setting. He reckons that a gentle cruise will see 20-22mpg if he's driving with economy in mind. Driving normally it's more like 16-18.

LPG could help I suppose.

Remember that you can't use the on-board display cause it measures in US Gallons...

I think it's highly unlikely a magnum ram will hit 24mpg!

My 2006 Hemi Ram has that, its called MDS, multi displacement system or something, dont know how it works or if it works at all as you never feel anything change whilst driving it. Mines LPG converted which helps a lot with the running costs.

That's interesting - and something I'd never thought of - US Gallons.!

So, when my Lincoln Navigator is showing mpg on the computer - it's in US Gallons.!

Brilliant. That means I'm not getting 14.5 per (measured) UK Gallon - I'm getting 17.4mpg..!!

I'm happy now bounce

15-17 (including towing- didnt seem to effect mpg) is what ive had out of the old 5.2's, the newer hemi's are better, but the disel rams are a genuine 20+mpg even out of a big 3500 dually

well hers the messages for you to see, he still claims it does 24mpg.

Dear genov12,

hi, how long have you had the truck ? is there any rust or bubbles no matter how small ? what is an honest mpg you get using it ? thankyou

my son and i bought the Dodge October 2009 - from a guy in Wellingborough, who had a massive barn next to his house, decked out full of American motors - all carpeted with juke boxes and a bar, it was amazing - he had took it in part-ex as he sold a Chevvy to a man from Swindon (this guy has rang me since advertising to tell me what he has done to the motor in his ownership)- so thats where we came in, my son is in the trade dealing in Mitsubishi - so we looked over the motor very carefully - we bought it to use to manuvere my restoration Mercedes (190 sl) around as it is not registered on the road, we have since removed the tow bar - there is absolutely no rust spots anywhere on the body the paintwork is excellent and stunning - as for petrol it definately is above 24 mpg

Dear genov12,

i asked for an honest mpg. there is no way your truck does 24 mpg unless lpg converted, i would therefore pay £3000 for it leaving enough money to get the lpg conversion done to get 24mpg

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... out of a dodge ram ??

for your info - my mother lives 23 miles away - it takes two gallons max there and back comfortably what mpg did you think it did than? - it is so very very kind of you to offer nearly 1600 less than we are actually after, we think you are more desparate than we are - jog on

did you not read the links i sent you ? if you really believe your truck does 24mpg maybe you should give me your email address so i can pass it on to every person on those forums that are getting half the mpg that you are ? i am sure they would pay you for the secret to doubling their mileage ? i offered you 1600 less as that is the price of fitting lpg to your truck to get anywhere near the mpg you supposedly get ! i am not desperate i have a 4x4 at the minute and cash to buy another vehicle perhaps you shouldnt treat prospective buyers as stupid, it only takes a quick search on the internet to see your claimed mpg is fictional. good luck with the sale

Guy over the back got 11 out of his though he was an unkind driver. The thing is 24mpg is probably possible driving gently at a cruise along a dual carriageway or motorway but you are pushing a barn dooe through air at speed so any decent increment will have a gravitational drop attached. I get 24mpg out of my blown Mustang - it's just a question of driviung technique and I don't mean not going fast, I mean not abusing the car and giving it large with the throttle and brakes.
Cruising a motorway all day, I've had 35mpg indicated but a blast down country lanes will return about 20.

So he may not be lying, he may be an enigmatic wafter.

I have a 1995 Ram Dayvan with the 5.2 Magnum, and although obviously not directly comparable with the Ram truck, for info I get around 11.5 mpg round town, and my personal best was 18 mpg on a run! I would be well chuffed if I could get 24 mpg out of it!

Offer to take it on a 50 mile'ish testdrive, starting with the tank full, then top it up at in the end.

In true Top Gear style knock £200 off asking price for every mpg below 24.

Hi Ive had a 97 4x4 shortbed ram with the 318 SB and a horrid manual 5 speed
that if i remember right did high teens to low twentys on a run.. I later had a 95 2WD longbed with the cummins diesel
(auto) that was easly into the mid 20s however i would look at a smaller euro or jap car or van if enonomy is the most important thing smile .... oh and wheeels and tires make a big difference.. bigger and chunky hit mileage but look coolbiggrin

I ran a Dakota Quad Cab for over 5 years & around 75k miles, it is slightly smaller & lighter than a Ram. With the 4.7 Magnum & 5 speed manual trans, It averaged less than 15mpg including towing. I had it LPG converted from import so that worked out at the equivalent of around 28 mpg £ for £. If you drive at 60 mph on the motorway you can get 24-26 mpg but as soon as you deviate form that you're back in the teens

Not quite the same thing, but I had a 2WD reg cab shortbed GMC Sierra with a 5.7 and auto. I never drove with economy in mind, 75 would be my average motorway speed (and I would often have the needle off the 85MPH clock) and I am pretty sure I recorded 19 US MPG after a long motorway run.

I made it a point not to check economy on a regular basis as I was pretty sure I would hit single digits the way I used to drive that thing hehe

This was when I used to live in the US, I wouldn't even entertain driving anything that uneconomical at UK petrol prices.

Strangely enough a guy at my work drives this exact same truck and his commute is around 40 odd miles each way on 99% US highways.

He claims he gets around 15-16 us mpg and that's at 60mph according to Enrique. I'm inclined to believe 24 mpg UK is very optimistic...
