Hello all,
I am in the market to buy an American truck.
Double cab, ie, 2 doors each side, and a short back, lot the humongous 8 foot or longer long bed.
I was really looking for a diesel, which I think rules out the F150, so this puts the F250 in the frame.
There was some bad report of some of the 2000 year engines being troublesome ? or did I hear wrong?
I like the King Ranch editions, but they are expensive.
What can you suggest, budget is about £15000.
I have imported 2 cars from USA previous, so not really challenged to importing a truck if required.
However, When I imported the pound / dollar was around th 1.75 so more worth it then as to now.
What is the spec, below the king ranch, or should I continue to have my eyes on the leather ?
Also, I am not really a big fan of the ugly but nice Dodge Ram, but could be an option.
What GMC trucks are decent, or other makes of trucks I could consider.

personally i would ditch the diesel idea, and for your £15,000 budget look at a later F150.Post 2004,the body and interior enhancements were greatly improved over the previous models.I looked at an F150 FX4 before i bought my Ram.The interior fit and finish on the Ford was better than the Ram.But i am Ram biased,as my previous Ram i had no problems with,so stuck with another one.
Altough it would'nt need much persuasion to part with it for an F150 raptor...

Yep, no diesels in the F150 only the 2 and 350 models.
In all honesty, The F250 and up is a lot more workman and truck like if that makes sense so unless you need the mega towing and load capacity, an F150 may be the better choice.
If you must have a diesel, the old 7.3 Powerstroke was bulletproof, the 6.0 that replaced it had problems and the 6.4 was even worse.
The new 6.7 is supposed to be the dogs danglies but that will be out of your price range.
Of the truck models, the King Ranch and Harley Davidson models come with the most toys but the KR has Analine (untreated) leather and takes some serious looking after.
The Lariat model (next one down) has leather and almost as much bling.
Don't bother with an XLT or lower models as they are considered work vehicle spec and pretty basic.
If you are going to import yourself, Texas is the place to look and I imported both of my own trucks from Houston, which has easy shipping to the UK.
If you have a budget of £15k, you can spend $15,000 over there as the shipping/Duty/VAT/SVA/MOT etc will turn the dollars into pounds.
Do a search on American Autotrader www.autotrader.com in Houston and use my old Zip Code of 77043 with a 50 mile radius to see what you can get.
Then, when you have a list, book a cheap flight, get yourself over there and do the deal.
Not trying to poach from PH but the biggest concentration of pick-ups are over on Rebel V8.
We have Chevy/GMC and Dodge owners there too so you could get another opinion on other brands.

We frequently get asked for diesels as people assume they will do more miles per gallon than the petrols. As others have said though they really are more truck like than petrols.
The other problem with wanting diesel is limiting yourself to F250/F350 or Ram 2500/3500. Because of the kerb weight of them you become very restricted as to what you can carry in them legally.
I priced up a new 2011 F250 6.7 diesel King Ranch yesterdy for a customer to replace his '03 plated one. A snip at a mere £51,995 + VAT.

New F250's are great but a bit more than the OP's budget
I like the HD option though, funnily enough
You can pick up Anniversary models like mine for $15 now over there with a bit of searching.
