Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask if any of you have had a LHD car in the UK as your daily and if it was ok and worth it? I know for overtaking it is harder and toll booths and car park ticket machines will be a pain but is it that bad?

I am moving to Scotland in the next few months and always liked my American cars. I could see myself in a Vette very easily! They are like less than half the price over there than they are here in Australia.

Cheers!

I've got a dodge challenger I drive everyday and I live in London. If you know the width of your own car then you won't have trouble parking. For under ground parking, well it's a small sacrifice I think. Just don't be lazy and enjoy your American car basically wink

I used my IROC Camaro everyday in London for 7 years, and had no real issues.

Car parks, drive through's etc can be a slight pain, but no big deal, you just lean over.. I never had problems with overtaking either as you can see clearer down the left side instead, which can be just as handy sometimes.

Other bonuses are parking can be easier, as you're generally kerbside. Vettes aren't that big, so size is no issue with a yank as a daily..

GO for it, you only live once.. !!!!

Two of my cars are LHD and they get used everyday. I just get the one the wife has decided not to take to work that day.

Can you actually overtake on single carriageways unless they are straight or curving slightly enough to allow you better vision ?

I fancy a Mustang at some point, but this has kind of put me off as most of road around here are single carriageway routes at best.

I've had both a Vette and two Z28s as dailies and never really had a problem. Tolls mean you have to be quick on your feet to get back in the car and through but that's life.

My current daily driver (well shared with my Jeep) is an 01 Z28 Camaro and I've also owned a 70 RS/Z28 and a 72 Charger, both of which were also my main cars.

I've found driving them around the London streets no problem at all, or certainly no more challenging than comparably sized rhd vehicles. Yes, it can sometimes be a tad tricky trying to overtake buses and the like if you've ended up right up behind them, but probably not as bad as you are thinking it might be. As for ticket machines in car parks, I just get out and walk round to them nowadays, rather than trying to reach over and through the passenger window.....only takes a few secs and I prefer the little walk to impaling myself on the handbrake when trying to lean across biggrin

Get one of those mobility extended mechanical arms. You can push bottons and grab tickets with them ok. Then no need to lean anywhere or get out of anything..

Good idea, I need to get one of these..... smile

To respond to the thread, I've been driving my 2008 Pontiac G8 GT over here in Wales & England (live in the Penarth/Cardiff area), with no problems at all.

It's nice to have a unique car..... smile

You don't really need one. Roads are rarely straight so you can see up the inside. keep well back and use the power to despatch vehicles. You can see better than RHD drivers in certain circmstances.

Hiya

yes, already mentioned! get the 'grabber' type mobility arms - when you need to get parking machine tickets, just punch the button with the 'nose' and 'grab' with the grabber!

Used to carry one of these all the time in the F150 Harley Davidson.. which is now unfortunatley gone frown

With cars which are much lower than the trucks - there will be a greater 'blockage' of view, however with slight adjustment to your driving style, you can easily overcome that - drop back a little more from the car in front so you can see more, sometimes you can even see right through the car in front's windows at the road ahead etc etc.

Cheers, Dennis!

I have no problems in switching from LHD auto, RHD auto, RHD manual in the UK,and get on fine with LHD manual in euroland...however I do tend to open the door a lot when exiting B'Ham airport....

In short, driving LHD in UK with plenty horses is not a problem.

yeah i drive a lhd often , have done for the last 10 years

its no bother at all , i kinda prefer that side really

worst bit for me is if you get up right behind a bus or lorry its a job to see round it , but you learn not to get right up close to stuff and you can usualy lean over and see past em

oh and when you first get it you will prob go up and get in the wrong side lol

Hi, I'm up in Scotland and have a RHD and LHD and both are fine to drive as daily's. As said, just drop back and use the inside viewing line! If you have the suspension to deal with windy roads and overtaking, go for it!! Some lovely driving roads up here and you can get some lovely backgrounds for photos of your new toy!

I daily drive my Astra which is RHD and drive my Cobra on nice days which is LHD. I have no issues just passing on single lane roads, is bit harder to see around the car in front of you. Getting enough power to pass isn't a issue though
