In a word they are great. i've had a few,an early one which had no supercharger. 260 bhp and a supacab, a later 4 door with 340 bhp and a lightning. try and get a 03 or 04 as they have more threads on the plugs, mine launched 2 plugs tho that was a few years ago and i'm sure there's a cure out now.
apart from that there quick, not as big as you would think, totally reliable and capable of 20 mpg driven with care. they also seem to be pretty depreciation proof, have cheap tax and cost peanuts to service which offsets higher fuel consumption and then some.
I'd say i'll buy another late low mile lightning at some point in the not too distant future.

Yes, I have one.

I bought it in 2005 in Dallas, used it as my daily driver in Texas for a year, then imported it to the UK when I moved back.
I used it as my daily again over here until 2 years ago as I didn't want to keep putting the miles on it, taking it out in the ice and salt etc and I have 2 other cars that serve as winter hacks.

Just to touch on a couple of points from Irishboy, there is no 04 HD. They stopped making them in 03 but you might find some registered later than that. Whatever it says on the plate though, 03 Anniversary models were the last.
The 03 mostly (but not all) has better cylinder heads with 8 threads in the plugs as opposed to 4.
Whatever you get, just ignore the stupid Ford plug change interval of 100k and change them every year.
Torque them up to 13 lb/ft and you will be fine.

Apart from that, mine has been dead nuts reliable. The build quality is fine. Don't believe everything you read on Pistonheads about American build quality. biggrin
I've modded the engine for drag racing and gone as fast as 12.9 in the quarter.
It gets about 15mpg around town, 18mpg on mixed driving and 22mpg if you put the cruise control on at 70mph and leave it there.
As for the size, really, it's no bigger than an LWB transit so roads aren't really a problem.
Most car parks over here have stupidly small spaces though so you will overhang or fill them up and multi-story places will be tight. Not much different to having a Range Rover or Shogun though.

Things to look out for?

Just the obvious really. Buy one that has obviously been looked after. Service history would be nice.
If the engine has been modded, try to find out what was done and who retuned it. Make sure you get the hand held tuner for any aftermarket mods if there is one.

No big worries on our 03 so far. Have to watch out for flat batteries if leaving it stood for a week or so. Like the late model Mustangs the stereo turns its display off with the key, but leaves a live feed to the amplifiers if you don't switch it off with the button first. Magnaflow wakes the neighours up when you set off early to Santa Pod. Could very easily use lots of rubber and oncoming drivers tend to be slightly intimidated when the side of the bed is coming towards them across their side of the road coming out of a roundabout.

Easy and great fun to live with and Mrs Mighty uses it as her daily driver, it doesn't matter if its shopping at Morrisons or a run over to her office on the other side of Yorkshire.
