This is just a heads up for those under 30 American owners who may have policies with Henderson Taylor or possibly other specialist insurers….

I’ve had an insurance policy with Henderson Taylor since May 2008 when I bought my ‘87 Camaro IROC-Z. It cost me £215 fully comp and it increased to £270 after the first year and then they wanted an additional £90 when I changed to my ’92 Z28.

I’ve just had a letter through from the underwriters to say that due to changes in their policy they can’t offer me a renewal. I spoke to Henderson Taylor directly and they were very apologetic but confirmed that their underwriters (Haggerty) will no longer insure anyone under 30.

After a bit of ringing around I settled on Adrian Flux who initially quoted me £304, but this changed to £540 when they realised they’d make a mistake with the number of claim free years I said I had on my other vehicle (insured with Bell).

So if anyone out there has a policy due for renewal soon, just be aware that you might have to end up trying to find insurance elsewhere!

Did you try 2Gether Insurance?

I got a cracking deal when sorting my GMC van's insurance. Policy underwritten by Highway.

Hello did you tell us that you are a Pistonheads member? That can save you up to 15%.

Insurance in the last few months seems to have gone very strange if you want something slightly unusual. I couldn't find anyone that would give me track-day cover on my Camaro and cover the modifications...
Alot of policies on the market seem to be withdrawn from what I've been told by brokers.

I did tell the lady I spoke to that I was a Pistonheads member, but there was nothing mentioned about discounts :/

I forgot to add that £540 was the price if I paid all in one go. Normally I'd cough up for the entire cost of the policy but since it's practically tripled I couldn't afford it. It's actually costing me nearer £720 due to the interest and direct debit set up fee. frown Not the insurers fault I know, but a kick in the balls nonetheless.

You're not wrong. I am struggling to understand how I've gone from paying £18 a month at age 23 with no experience on such a vehicle, to paying £60 a month with two claim free years and at age 25.

By the way were you at Goodwood for the April breakfast club? I was going to introduce myself but I couldn't find you once I'd had breakfast. Your Camaro sounded amazing!

I do feel sorry for the brokers sometimes, as they're the ones that have to deal with the public and make it 'look' fair.. I don't understand why they do it but I got quoted for a great policy thru Henderson Taylor, and the underwriters suddenly withdrew it.

Yes, I was at Goodwood Brekkie Club in April... My Camaro can sound a bit naughty with the exhaust bypass valves fully open.. evil

You could try Richard Egger Insurance (they may have changed the name) I went through them rather than Flux as they covered the mods as well as 4 trackdays a year and were c.£200 cheaper. Lots of discount for owners club membership etc

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to ring A-plan today and if they're cheaper I will cancel my policy with Adrian Flux, I'm still within my 14 day cooling off period so should get most of my money back. £60 a month to insure a car I use about twice a month is a bit steep!

Well I switched to A-plan today. They were only about £100 cheaper but they were way more professional and a lot friendlier! I found Adrian Flux a bit pushy TBH, especially when I told them I wanted to cancel!

I'll be calling A-Plan tomorrow. I started a new policy with flux yesterday but it cannot hurt to check I don't need to use the cooling off period. To be fair Flux have been good to me over the last few years so I expect it will be a case of calling them up and them agreeing to lower my premium. We shall see.

I've got my renewal coming up in June and am now getting a little worried that the quote I get is going to make distressing reading! I'm currently with A-Plan as they offered by far the best price when I first took out the policy and again at my renewal last year.

What is goin on with insuranc companies. last year cost me around £180 same as for years and now this year Sureterm are looking for £490 and Adrian flux near enough the same (even though renewal they sent me in May was £220 which I declined because I was working on car and thought was steep anyway. Are they taking the p1ss or what....
