Buying a Grand Cherokee 5.7 - advice appreciated
Discussion
Hi there
I been lurking about here for quite a while and finally the time has come to ask for help.
My plan up until recently was to get a Discovery 3 to replaced the recently sold defender (due to arrival of the the baby) but TBH the prices are just too strong and the reliability look a little sketchy. Over the years I have pondered the GC mainly due to relatively low purchase price against spec and performance.
I'll will be going for a 2006 (pre 23 march 2006) Overland. The head tells me to go for the 3ltr derv but the heart goes for the 5.7 hemi and then get a LPG conversion. Anyway on the basis that it's the 5.7 does anybody out there have any knowledge on:
Reliability?
parts availability?
engine diagnostics? - home fault diagnostic software potential (I was thing about Gendan anyway for the SAAB 9-5 aero)
feasibility of DIY maintenance?
Or am I just mental and digging myself a money pit!
Thanks

Sis in law has had a Grand Cherokee since new, it's been fine no major probs despite doing the absolute minimum maint.
Engine diagnostics..OBD2
Well until you LPG it then you are on your own I guess.
I'm in the States, we can never work out why Jeep Cherokees seem to be popular in UK. Don't misunderstand me, there is nothing wrong with them it's just that they are almost at the botton here when it comes to buying/choosing a 4x4.
Jeep Wranglers however are very popular and sell well.(Different market)

have a look at a proper Jeep and import a proper jeep wagoneer re-built from the states. a number of specialists over there are re-building them. They are in a different league to the new stuff and have bags of character.
