Looking at a Jeep GC 4.0/4.7v8 or Ch 3.7v6.
Is there anything to choose between them for reliability or any good buyers guides out there?
Unlikely to be used off road and economy is not an issue. MrsP has a petrol card ready for the abuse.
Is mileage that important?

I looked into them. TBH this one need work so I passed but done plenty of reserch. Check the transfer box especially on the 1999 onwards as they are a constant velocity drive. If the coupling goes its about £400. test by doing a tight figure 8 in a car park to see if there is binding in the drive train. Its a permanat 4wd system which drives the rear and transfers to the front when needed.
electric windows seem comman fault, cheap fiddly fix is on the web.Trans need mopar ATF +4 only I think, tranny filter change is a good move (about £30 with gasket)front CV gaters tend to come astray, bit of a pain to fit back on, leaky diffs, transmission seals x2 where the transfer box joins the tranny. There is a weep hole to show if either is leaking ( drop props/T/box..parts are cheap..do both while its out) Rock front seats as the frame mounts can break.early ones suffer from warped discs, later modded.
This is only on 1999 to about 2004 which I looked up and was a 4.0 petrol. Basically get one with history thats been looked after.
Parts available on ebay via dealers.
Not knocking them I just like to know what may happen.

Grand is 4.0 litre straight six if old shape or 4.7 V8. New shape are 4.7, 5.7 or 6.1 V8.

Old shape diesels are 3.1 for early ones, then replaced with a 2.7. Later ones are 3.0

Recently bought a '99 Cherokee 4.0 petrol, ( straight 6), full history, 80,000 miles, leather etc. Absolutely love it, everything works, and just really enjoy driving it!

Steve - does your 99 feel very dated to drive?

we had an R reg (98) 4.0 litre SE Cherokee. I liked it very much. Not quite as refined as a classic Range Rover and more prone to lighting up the rear tyres.

But I have to say I really liked driving it. Ok it's not the most sophisticated on the road, but I've grown up on 4x4's, so I liked the way it went and felt.

Dated, maybe. But IMO I'd say more tactile and a more real driving experience. Some new cars cosset very well, but produce a very isolated and muted driving experience by contrast, even if they do roll less and grip better.

I've not been in a newer Cherokee, actually it's not really a Cherokee, in the US they are called Liberties, but Jeep decided to keep it as Cherokee in the UK. I'm sure these are closer to a Freelander in terms of on road ability compared to the older XJ Cherokee. But I still think they are a good vehicle and like them.

Due to a recent change in fortune frown and the sad demise on MOT of the transit we decided a month or so ago to lose the car and van and get 1 vehicle that could do both. A local guy was getting rid of his '98 R reg Cherokee cheap with no MOT but low mileage so we picked it up.

Initially I hated it, and to be fair A) I was comparing it to a 540 touring, and B)I just didnt 'get' it.

The BMW hasnt moved for the last 2-3 weeks as I'm in the Jeep all the time, by choice now....and I do 'get it' now....I like the looks (could do with a lift, 31s, tints and bars/steps laugh) , the seats are comfortable, loads of space, cheap to repair, etc.

OK its a 2.5L sport so slow as you like but what swung it for me was taking it up some boulders and mounds around Cheddar.......now that was the most fun I've had in ages in a car with the whole family along!!laugh

My '99 doesn't feel very dated, but the previous owner really looked after it, and so it feels very 'tight'. My wife's got a Crossfire, but since getting the Jeep, i've hardly driven hers! Always looking forward to getting back into the jeep...........only problem so-far is, i've popped the speakers!!!!!

I think we are going to go for a facelift Grand Ch post 2000 with the 4.0 or ideally 4.7. There is a buyers guide in 4x4 mag this month. I think it will be a better bet than a Disco or Rangie.
