Hi there, could anyone tell me what charges are payable when importing a car to the UK from the US?
The car would be over 25 years old, would vat/taxes etc be payable?
Thanks.

You will pay 10% tax on the car and shipping and then 17.5% vat on the whole figure.
For e.g 10,000+1,000 ship= 11,000+ 10% =12,100+17.5%vat=14,217.50p
Where is the car, i know a decent shipper.

Thanks Mick, the car is in California. That all seems a bit steep, how do they know how much the car cost?
Is it possible to lower the value for this purpose?
Apreciate the name of the shipper.Pm if you like.
Thanks, Lewis.

Lewis,

You will need to provide a bill of sale. Which will be the cost ( wink ) that you paid wont it.

HOWEVER.....Customs and Excise are getting wise to this and have a lot of experience of what something is worth.

Obviously, if its a 57 Chevy convertible in concours condition and the bill of sale has it down as a $10,000 car then alarms will be ringing and you'll get a tug.....

You can still be artistic in the valuation but my advice is dont take the piss..... wink
