Anyone know the full spec on these and differences from US models?

Where any manuals and did they have a LSD?

Cheers.

Main difference was that the automatic shifter was on the floor between the seats instead of the usual US stalk on the steering column. Didn't have privacy glass; standard spec had basic leather and moon roof. And of course RHD and 4WD - some US explorers were RWD. Engine is the same 210bhp 4.0 as the US XLT that I have. Those were the main differences as far as I can tell.

I'd say a great cheap 4wd buy if properly maintained.

& the spare wheel was in a different place, quite fast but make a 4.0 cherokee look quite economical...

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/15539.shtm... - 1999 4.0 Cherokee 17 mpUSg combined

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/15523.shtm... - 1999 4.0 Explorer 16 mpUSg combined

I get between 18 - 24 mpg in a '99 Ex

Edited to answer the other original question - fairly sure it has the same LSD as the US equivalent models.

toured scotland a few year ago & took 98 4.0 explorer & 99 4.0 grand cherokee & did exactly the same (lots of)miles, the cherokee was load better on fuel but not as fast, but maybe that was just a bad example.
Saying that my mate replaced the explorer with a 4.4 X5 & that was proabably even worse on fuel.

A very good mate just wrote one off. At about 50mph on the A41 it suddenly turned right and hit the crash barrier. At first he thought maybe he'd hit black ice. On closer inspection it appears the offside front hub assembly broke. Not sure if this is common but not good news all the same. Did these not have issues with throttle sticking wide open, something to do with the cruise control ?.

I thought it was to do with the floor mat with RHD vehicles, were part of it could ride up above the accelerator pedal, so when you braked it also pushed the throttle down.

think it was something to do with the cruise control coming on, on its own

Standard spec in the UK did not have leather. I had a UK spec one which came with cloth interior. The North Face came with heated leather seats & CD changer. The SOHC V6 is unreliable at high mileages. It has two timing chains and its a fiddly job to change them. IIRC it's the rear chain for the right bank that causes problems. If you hear a diesel like rattle on starting the engine then run away. The V6 is the final incarnation of the Ford Cologne engine as found in the Capri, Granada etc. Plenty of tuning bits available for it as a version of the engine was fitted to the Mustang.
