Hi Guys,

Just bought my first American Monster: A 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a nice 4.0 L petrol engine. Great tank, in fabulous condition (45k miles!) for pocket money, ideal as a run around car and some fun light offroad outings.

A couple of questions for you guys who know these cars well:

- Just been to the Jeep dealership for a couple of tailgate struts: £75 each!!! That's definitely taking the p***! Where else can I buy these parts?

- Need to replace the tyres soon and was thinking of fitting oversize tyres to get better ground clearance (the exhaust is so low!). Currently running standard 225/70/16. What size can I go up to safely?

Thanks for your help.

Raph,

Try

www.rockauto.com

they have loads of stuff on the shelf and very quick to ship to the UK. One of few US companies who are ok dealing with us in the UK.

I think theses are the parts you need but you will need to get the rlevant details from something like a Haynes Manual to be sure. But even with shipping and customs should be a better price

Have a look on eBay for the struts there's a couple of online Jeep ompanies that sell them way way cheaper.

Also have a look at www.birtydastards.com it's a UK Jeep forum that's a wealth of help & support, they've helped me out with questions on my GC loads of times.

Hi all,

For the tailgate struts, Ebay is the way to go. £40 a pair! Thanks Jackester smile

What about oversized tyres then? Any good? How big can I go before I hit problems? 225/70/16 is just a little small for that big tank biggrin

lovely things cherokees. had a 1995 4.0 myself a few years back and it was one of my biggest mistakes ever letting her go.

if you do go down the offroading route, then actually i found that just stock they can be great, i actually had to pull out a landrover 90 that got stuck after he tried to follow me up quite a steep hill and got stuck when he slid back down. (probably more the driver than the car however!)
Aside from that though they are a little on the low side for decent offroading, but nothing that a 2" lift wouldn't fix, which you can do for quite cheap.

actually, thinking about it I'm really really tempted to get another, if only the mpg was a little less suicidal!

Congratulations on your wise purchase !
I've just sold mine unfortunatley, but couldn't praise it high enough. If you so require i have the entire factory service manual in sections ( .rar files ) - you're welcome to a copy.

Amongst many other things, it'll show you how to deal with the (sometimes) troublesome 'Neutral selector switch' (NSS)

Best wishes.
Eddie
