Importing 996 Carrera 4S to UK from - what needs to be done?
Discussion
Hi
A friend is bringing his car back with him from the US and wants to know what mods need doing for UK compliance. Can someone please advice on the work that needs to be done, a good place to get any required parts and if there are any specialists who cam help if necessary?
Thanks in advance

The car has to comply with UK regulations. That means white front sidelights, side repeaters, amber rear indicators and a rear fog light and illuminated cabin switch. Most American cars have to undergo conversion and pass the SVA test.
If the car is already Euro-compliant, I believe you can obtain a Certificate of Conformity from the manufacturer to show it conforms to UK regs and then all you have to do is register and tax it.
If he has owned the car for over 6 months, I think it is, and can prove it with utility bills etc, I think he doesn't have to pay the import duty of 10% but still has to pay VAT.
This is all off the top of my head.

Before he goes through with importing it has he actually thought if it is worthwhile?
Unless it is a particularly special car that he intends on keeping, trying to sell a US spec 996 on when he is done with it (with its nasty bumpers, lhd, no CoC) will be very difficult.
If he is definitely bringing it over, I'd recommend Auto Audio (www.autoaudio.uk.com) for the IVA. They regularly do work for specialist dealers, and were the first people in the country to go through and pass the IVA (a Challenger).
