Hi all, i'm in whistler in canada for a year, living the dream, riding my mountain bike, snowboarding, working in a hotel and generally having an awesome time. Got here a month and a bit ago and i'm missing driving. I've also always wanted a big old american truck (or a fox body mustang), i'm sure i heard that if i owned a car over here for more than 6 months, then i wouldnt have to pay the import duties if i was to sling it in a container and send it back to the uk. Where i could road legalise it and either keep it or sell it for more than i paid for it over here, hopefully pocketing me a few quid.

Does anyone know anything about this 6 month rule? I've tried searching but i'm either crap, or theres very little information about it...

Thanks

Nick

The rule applies for living in America, indeed you will have to prove you have lived there for a minimum of 12 months, proof by way of utility bills etc, this will enable you to not have to pay import duty or VAT if you ship it back to England, you will however not be able to sell the vehicle on once here for a minimum of 12 months. I'm sure someone will be along to confirm if these same rules apply for Canada
