Hi, I have a 99 S10 truck, when I switch on the ignition the "service engine soon " light comes on and stays on whilst I am driving, the mileage is 108000, does anyone know if there is a way to cancel it? many thanks David.

Does a service cancel it?

Stick a bit of electrical tape over it. GM only include that feature to annoy you. If smoke and flames start puthering-out from under the hood, you should probably ignore that too - it's most likely nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the speedy replies , I dont think that it is anything to worry about , but it is a bit annoying , I will put a bit of tape over, it if the flames start to show then I suppose I will just have to get more tape! Thanks again, David.

Seriously, there is a 'dongle' you can buy in the US (from stores like Pep Boys and Autozone) that reads and interprets the fault codes logged by the vehicles ECU and has the facility to reset the check engine light. However, if the fault is not corrected, it will just come back on again.
Most common fault codes relate to dirty air filter, oxygen sensor (exhaust), MAF sensor (intake), PCV valve (emmisions control) PCM (ignition). All pretty easy fixes. But codes obviously range from the 'quite trivial' to the 'seriously terminal'. The fact that your S10 is running OK would suggest the former - but ignoring it is probably asking for trouble at some point down the line.

You need a code reader buddy, message me if you want one cheap. Easy too use, it tells you the fault code and a description of the fault and once you have fixed the problem you can reset the ecu which turns the service engine soon light off.[edited for spelling]

You don't need a code reader - just jumper the terminals on the OBD1 (if it is indeed OBD1)terminals at the ALDL port under the dash. Grond A-F and turn the ignition on and then each code will flash up.

Did you fix this? My truck is similar although modified a bit.
