Been running a 98 XJ cherokee for the last 12 months here in canada, its been pretty reliable - just a few relatively minor issues.

I'm moving back to the UK in a week or so, and it looks like 2000 grand cherokees are pretty reasonable price wise these days, question is are they different in terms of reliability - the 4.0 litres will be running the same engine, but is there any tranny issues to be looking out for and do some of the extra electrical bits and bobs add to fragility??

Also whats best engine wise?

I've had a '97 4.0 Cherokee for four years that I've been very happy with and hasn't cost me a lot to run. I used to do only long distance runs and got 26mpg but this has dropped to 18mpg because I've only been doing runs around town recently. I'm no leadfoot so you might get 15mpg around town if you're used to pushing on a bit. I thought about upgrading to a Grand or an X5 but parking in my area is a nightmare so I've stuck to the Cherokee, which fits into more spaces because it isn't as long.

Jeeps have collapsed in price since the oil price spike last year so you can get a good one for not a lot of money. I think the V8 is very heavy on petrol but I suppose you could get an LPG version (half price fuel). There are also diesel versions but I don't have any direct experience so can't comment on them.
