Hi All, has anyone actually bought one of the above for £30k or is it a ploy to get you in? I just imported my Escalade from the US and it cost me £50k! Anyone bought one from Stratstone and if so, how much? I called them today and was quoted £54k!

Yes, why do you think thats too much? Its fully loaded apart from the wheels. I have had Range Rovers in the past, but they are everywhere now and its very rare to see an Escalade.

How does a $35k (after a haggle) car here, turn into a GBP50k car over there. Even after the cost of importing it, SVA, tax etc., we seem to be adrift by around 15 thousand quid.
I promise I'm not gloating - I'm just flabbergasted.
To a degree I'm in the same boat. I paid around $36k for a new LWB Suburban in '06 - which is ostensibly the same vehicle as the 06 Escalade ESV, without the bling and sharp panels. Today it is worth the princely sum of $9,000, with 50,000 mls on it.

Sorry forgot to say car is brand new. Its all wheel drive with all options. List was $70k and I paid $60k, which I thought was a good buy. As for resale, I think I could keep it for a few years and still get half the money back.

Cant believe your Suburban is only worth $9k! Thats terrible, I thought it would be worth around $15k!

Why did you import one when they have always been sub £50k for a UK spec car from Stratstone? Even 6 months after the UK launch you could have a fully specced UK car for less than £45k?

The UK spec cars are not kitted out to the same degree as the US ones. AFAIK, the 22" factory wheels are not available on the UK cars, along with the big screen in the dash with media controls and reversing camera, plus a couple of other options only available on US cars. Plus, if you buy a UK car you have to deal with Stratsone. Oh, and as for getting back half your dosh after a few years, dream on. I have a similar US import, fully loaded, similar price, bought from new...best dealer bid 2 years later is 20k. Enjoy it, it's great fun and annoys the lentilists no end, but a blue chip investment it ain't!

Sorry, I was influenced by your earlier thread (asking about wheels), where you stated you'd just taken delivery of a 2007 Escalade. So I'm a little confused now.

Depreciation on full-size SUV's is pretty terrifying - and mine does have a couple of things going against it. It's not 4x4 (a bit unnecessary where I live) and they introduced the new shape just a few months after I bought it.

You may do a little better in the UK with a vehicle like an Escalade than you would in the US when it comes to chopping it in. Since the spike in gas prices last year and the onset of economic melt-down, sales of new and second-hand big SUV's have pretty much ground to a halt (relatively speaking). I don't think GM's Missouri plant have produced any new Suburban/Yukon/Escalade since December 08.

I spoke to Stratstones before buying and was quoted £56k for the spec I wanted. Doing it myself saved me £6k which is good for an hours work and 2 phone calls. At the moment 2007 models are selling for around £25-£30k so I would say mine will definately be worth £25k in a few years as I only do 1000 miles a year.

Sorry I just call it a 2007 as thats when the shape changed. Mine is a brand new 2009. Did you not know the shape was about to change on the Suburban? Would have been nice of the dealer to let you know!

Truth is, I didn't really care at the time. I needed a big vehicle for work, that I could double-up as personal transport (i.e. not a van) and I'd only heard good things about the Suburban/Yukon from a reliability and durability standpoint. In fairness, mine had a hard life in it's first 2 years in terms of miles and load-lugging and towing and it's never missed a beat.
I don't blame the dealer for wanting to 'off' his old stock - had I been in his shoes, I'd have probably kept my mouth shut about the impending new model too. The US car buying experience does encourage impetuous behavior, in that I showed-up, test drove it, signed the paperwork and drove it home - all in the space of two hours.

Have you had any issues with your SUV? The Range Rovers I have had were always in the garage being fixed!

Hardly anything. One of the bushings on the front sway-bar creaked a bit after around 10k miles, but just needed lubricating. The drivers seat mechanism made a weird clicking noise, which I thought was a motor, but it turned out to be a cable from the harness catching on the moving part of the seat base. Other than that, it has been utterly faultless. It's now got 56k miles on it - still on the original tyres (Firestone Wilderness LE) and just a couple of small parking lot dings. The paint, chrome and exterior plastic trim are all otherwise like new after 3 1/2 years in the blazing sun.
Nothing has ever leaked out of it, it has started first prod, every time, never popped a bulb and frankly hauls ass for a 3 ton vehicle. (You watch, it'll all go to sh!t now I've said all this!) It is a little thirsty, however.
Like you, I've had a couple of Range Rovers in the past and didn't rate either of them. One of them had an air-suspension valve body fault that the dealer never fixed properly, which almost drove me insane.
In summary, I don't think you can go wrong with a full-size GM SUV. If you can live with the physical size and their scary fuel consumption, they are pretty much bullet-proof. I was just a little surprised at the steep price tag on yours. That said, if you are happy with that and enjoy the car, who cares what anyone else thinks...

Sounds very good to me. Here £50k is nothing! I was quoted over £70k for a Range Rover! As for Fuel, I will run it on LPG which is half the price of petrol so its like it does 30mpg!

They had 8 cars for £30k - we bought 5 for clients - they were 08 models with full euro spec so missing 22s and power sidesteps but absurd value nonetheless.

Oh, so they did exist then! Where they bad colours, did they have much warranty left? When did you buy them as they are still advertising them now! Can't believe I ended up paying £50k and its only got 18 inch wheels too! Just out of interest did your 5 stay in the UK, as I have heard most of our cars are going to Europe with the euro being so strong.

My mate is looking for a new one at the minute, do you know of any around in black?

they were all black with black - 4 with bench in middle row and one with captains chairs. 3 went to uk retail customers, 1 retail in europe and 1 to trade in europe.
it was a ridiculously cheap deal- we rang all our clients to tell them. There is one about that may be available, and if you need the sat nav and dvd reprogrammed for europe let me know.
thanks
