chevy mpg

Hi,can someone tell me what mpg you can expect from a 90s chevvy truck fitted with a 5.7 v8 fuel injected engine, 2wheel drive, also would there be any difference with the 4 wheel drive,I understand that there are plenty of variables but its just everyday driving, cheers.

Depends on the year and the truck to be honest.

I'm not sure when the LQ4 and 9 engines came into use but I guess late 90's. They are basically a cast iron blocked LS1, which is quite fuel efficent.

The olders ones probably aren't as good by a couple of mpg.

However GM make many many trucks, a small lightweight one should be a lot more fuel efficent than a huge dually top weight class truck.

As a rule of thumb:

-2wd should be slightly better by a few mpg
-manual should be slightly better than an auto by a few mpg
-4wd, even in 2wd mode still has to turn the extra prop and diff. So more wieght and friction, thus the slightly lower mpg.

For petrol trucks I've seen claims of 8-20mpg depending on what it is. I suspect for the most part many of the trucks should be able to offer similar mpg to a V8 Range Rover (classic or P38) but in a vehicle that is bigger and heavier.

As for 2wd or 4wd. Well depends what you will do with it, if you want to off road it or haul massive loads then 4wd will be the one. If it's purley road use and no real towing then 2wd will be just fine.

My 1998 LS1-engine Camaro weighing 1580kg would do about 20mpg on a steady commute and I suppose 25-30 on longer runs. A barnyard weighing more would do far less.

A guy with a Dodge Ram 5.7 near me reports as low as 11mpg but I've seen counter-claims of about 16. Chevy will be similar.

my 04 4WD 5.3L Tahoe does an impressive 9mpg at 100mph (on a closed road/track) ! Averages about 15mpg round town and mid 20's on a run. My 5.7L LS1 trans am will hit the 30s on a run and 20round town - but I'd say it's not being driven correctly if you achieve these figures
