Hi guys.

In a moment of idle speculation, I entered the details of an '80s Camaro into Lancaster insurance. For some reason, despite the fact that it said it had calculated the quotes, it didn't come up with anything.

Does anyone know which insurance firm is the best (cheapest) for dealing with American cars in the UK? I'd be looking at a 2.8-litre V6 model (because I'm only 24 and fuel costs a fortune, besides, I'd be satisfied with a 2.8-litre Capri so why not?).

Also, what kind of premiums would they be likely to come up with, bearing in mind that it wouldn't be the V8?

Get a copy of Classic American magazine, all the major companies are in there. Flux, Footman James etc etc.

Hi, I've used Adrian Flux for years and they've always been good with my yanks, you might want to do a bit of surfing in regards fuel economy prior to buying a V6 '80's Camaro as the difference between the V6 and the V8 in mileage is tiny, however the handling, specs, performance are a mile apart.

When you say '80's Camaro I assume you mean a post '82 3rd gen, in which case definately go with the V8 as the V6's are sooo slow, really wallow and aren't that different on fuel than the V8's...

I don't agree. Yes we'd all like a V8, and I have one in my Dodge but my 88 Camaro 2.8 RS does close on to 30 mpg depending on how it's driven. It'll do more than the speed limit and handles well on the Scottish backroads. It's a manual rather than and automatic, but trim level different? Only the daft vertical facing clock as far as I know. Electric windows, cruise, air, electric trunk closer etc.
I've had Yanks for my daily drivers for 20 years and have loved every minute.

To the OP... Go for it. Get the best you can afford and have a great time. Shop around for prices and join a club, AAC, AACI, your local street club, whatever. You get a discount from the insurance companies for it. Don't worry about spares etc, there's loads of companies out there who do mail order, how do you think I manage up here!! Or get stuff of ebay US it's easy.

get the V8, you'll regret it otherwise... You may find it's expensive as you're under 25, but get decent restricted mileage clasic policy and you may be ok..

I've been with MCE for years for all 3 of my yanks... they haven't let me down yet (touch me head... lol). Their accident claims service is awesome through Car Crash Line

Sureterm Direct I'm with - (99 Camaro V8, full no claims but first time Yank). They were quite a bit cheaper than Adrian Flux etc...

Plenty to choose fro. Adrian Flux used to be the default choice but they've gone expensive. I have to laugh at the MCE recommendation because I've heard lots of complaints about them and from my experience, I've yet to get past at least a 20 minute wait on the phone just to get a quote so if they're that bad taking your money, guess how the rest of it goes. Also heard bad news about incorrect documents and them trying to charge you to put it right. Sureterm Direct, AON are also ones to try. I use A-Plan because for my modified Mustang, they were way cheaper than anyone.

Sureterm in Huntingdon.

Excellent service-free equity redstar beakdown cover- cheaper than most - highly recommended.

A-Plan gave me the best quote and that's without using my no-claims which I use on another vehicle. They were also the most pleasant to deal with - a polite & knowledgeable person answered the phone and that was the same person who took my details and rang me back a few minutes later with the quote...I don't like it when you are passed from department to department.

A Plan for me too. Quoted £900 for modified Lightning with Flux
and £460 with A Plan. Great to deal with too.

I use Footman James, if you go for the fully comp option you will also probably get free insurance for any other car (third party only). they are very helpful and I have found that I don't have to wait for hours to speak to someone. 0845 458 6791.
