Challenger costs- the myths and the truth?
Discussion
As everyone is excited about the new SRT 8 Challenger due to hit the streets in April I thought I would clarify a few things for anyone looking to buy a car over here or over there. There have been some tales in the papers of the car only costing £22000 and some grumbles on forums about us importers charging over £42K. I wish we were making £18-20k on each car but the reality is very different.
For a start the cars are being sold for anywhere from 10-20000 USD over list meaning that the cheapest car we will buy will be $53000 (list at $43000). On that basis costs are as follows.
Cost of car - £27000
Inland shipping to port 500
International shipping 1000 (on average)
Shipping insurance 200
UK customs clearance and
Port fees 400 (on average)
UK inland transport 250( on average)
UK duty 2910
UK import VAT 5602
SVA mods 1000 (allowing this as early cars will need a lot of time to resolve)
SVA test 160
UK registration 230
UK warranty 500
Sundry expenses 150
Total costs 39902
If someone imported the car themselves my guess is that costs would be about a grand higher due to paperwork and other costs being charged at a higher rate. So ultimately the saving over buying from an importer or doing it independenly is about £3000/4000. Certainly worth saving but remember you will have the full £27k and other costs out of your bank account for several weeks before you get the car and finance companies will only finance a physical vehicle.
I hope this clarifies things and if anyone need any advice on the import process let me know- I never put people off doing it themselves (I just hope they don't !!!!)
Cheers

Nice post, 51st; too many people assume that you take the dollar price, halve it, add a couple of thousand for fees and that's the landed cost.
For me, and I don't have money to burn, I'd much rather hand it over to an importer and collect the car registered and ready for the road. The less I have to deal with officialdom, the better...

Nice on Charles - I can confirm that the difference in cost from personally importing vs. buying via an importer for my '07 GT/CS was just £2k (just sorry I couldn't put the business your way )
For me - that was well worth the saved aggro!
