On a recent visit to the MPH show I came across the GT Mustand Shelby GT500, and I must say what a fantastic looking car... It had so much presence that it left me working out how I could afford one soon...

What are peoples experiences with these cars? and are they only Left hand drive?

They are only LHD but they do RHD conversions in the UK at a price to make your eyes water. Reliability is going to be pretty much beyond reproach as Americans use girders where a light bar would do.

Yes, they are only left hand drive I am afraid. But dont let that put you off. It is really easy to get used to.

There are two camps when it comes to the Ford Shelby GT500.

1. Those that love the whole brand, gimmick, collectability of the car.

2. Those that realise you can get a normal Mustang GT V8 and spend a lot less than the total cost of the GT500 and get a better handling, faster and individual car.

You will be looking at around the mid £40k for a brand new one maybe even a bit lower. You could try and import one from the US yourself but there are still dealers over there with very high prices so be careful.

There will be a few GT500 owners posting no doubt with better answers regarding the actual car itself. With some money thrown at a stock GT500, you can get an awesome quick car. But there is the arguement that Ford/Shelby should have built it like that in the first place.

If you are interested in a Mustang performance brand then also look at Saleen, Roush and Steeda to name a few for very quick, sharp handling Mustangs that will give a stock GT500 a run for its money and will also cost you less.

I looked at a dealer last week in the US who has exported these. He had a black convertible in stock (I didn't know they did those) ready to be delivered. The list price was $51,000 but the dealer was taking a $15K premium (I also didn't realise they did that!).

Apart from VAT what would you pay if you imported a US car? Is it any different for second hand cars?

Apart from VAT there is import duty @ 10%, this 10% gets added on to the purchase price+ shipping costs, the total of those three then has 17.5%VAT added on top (tax on tax)

As a previous Z28 owner and massive fan of the 4th gen LS1-engined cars, it hurts me to say that these statements don't really hold up.
Best I ever saw for an SS was 13.25 over the quarter though many were mid to high 13's. The Mustang GT will turn 13.5 out of the box and 13.2 with a cold air kit. The GT500 is a high 12 second car.
The interior of the 4th gen is actually very plastic and the Mustang GT is light years ahead with the Premium pack and interior upgrade. It's only the base Mustangs that have nasty hard plastic swathes unbefitting the car and then it's a toss-up.
There are plenty of good Z28s selling for low money although it's fair to say that the 4th gen Z28/SS low milers, especially the anniversary editions, are already commanding silly prices.
I like this one:

There's still plenty of good low mileage (50k and under) LS1 SS's about if you look around. There's been some really quite tidy ones on Ebay for $15k - $18k over the last couple of months. You've got to remember the SS package only cost about an extra $3k in 2002 on top of the already inflated final year price of around $26k, so it wasn't like it was a big money option, and so they're not what you would call very rare, just slightly less numerous than the Z28.

I do like that Sunset Orange though. Mind-you, you could have THIS ONE with only 32k on the clock and which looks pretty tidy, shipped, duties payed, SVA'd and on the road in the UK for around £12k.

I've seen others just as tidy and with not many more miles on for around $15k, so are these bargains being sold by people who don't know what an SS is worth all of a sudden, or are the others actually just over inflated by sellers who think they can make a buck on the back of the new Camaro coming out?
