Callaway C16 Speedster
V8 muscle on the lawn
This is the new Callaway C16 Speedster, the flagship model in the C16 line-up from Corvette specialists Callaway which will be launched on the concept lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, August 19th, 2007.
The C16 Speedster was styled by Paul Deutschman, architect of the "Callaway look" and designer of the original 1990 Callaway Speedster. Every body panel is new and there’s a bespoke leather interior too. Door sills, the steering wheel and the dash area all carry signature Callaway badging. Each Speedster is tailored to the buyer's specifications, including interior and exterior colours and a personalised build plate.
The Callaway supercharged, intercooled, 6.2L all-alloy hand-built V8 motor produces 700hp and 660lb-ft of torque - propelling the Speedster from 0 to 60mph in an estimated 3.2 seconds. Maximum speed of the C16 Speedster is said to be over 210 mph.
The Speedster utilises a newly developed Callaway/Eibach Multi-Pro coil-over suspension system featuring 10-position compression and rebound adjustability. It also has Callaway’s C16 spec Callaway/Dymag Carbon wheels that the firm claims weigh approximately 40-percent less than the lightest aluminium wheels. These TUV and DOT tested wheels feature forged magnesium spiders surrounded by carbon fibre rims and measure 19" x 10" front and 20" x 13" rear. Residing behind the wheels is a Callaway / StopTech brake system which utilises 6-piston front and 4-piston rear callipers gripping 355mm x 32mm discs.
"This is Callaway Cars' most exquisite vehicle to date," said company founder Reeves Callaway. "The C16 Speedster marks our 20th anniversary with Corvette and 30th year in business, and having this statement of our passion for the automobile featured on the concept lawn at Pebble Beach is a high water mark for us."
The C16 Speedster goes on sale this autumn and starts at $305,000 USD (just under £150K). Speedster No.1 of the series will be delivered to its new owner at Pebble Beach.
If you can’t quite stretch to the complete car, Callaway C16 components are also available separately for all C6 generation Corvettes.
Or is it just me? I would much rather they threw a roof on the top of this thing, as mentioned above, major scuttle and shake plus no way would you want to roll this thing, or even a collision, someone could drive over the top of you with there big SUV.
I wish these niche sports car makers would hold off making claims based purely on the size of the cogs in the gearbox and the theoretical max power of the engine.
Also this is based of a C6 vette, and the Z06 does 200mph out the box, and this has a fairly substantial power increase over that, along with probably less aerodynamic drag with that low windscreen. I'd say 210mph is a conservative estimate, either that or it's unstable above that speed, which is more likely unless it has some hidden underbody ground effects.

Massive power, V8, Carbon fiber wheel rims, speedster styling etc should add up to something pretty special... Yet somehow Callaway have managed to turn all these exciting ingredients into the automotive equivalent of a microwave TV dinner when it should have been lobster thermidor by candle light. If they really are that short on design ideas please do get in touch.
