Hi all,

I've recently got hold of a 1987 Chevy El Camino with a 305 small block.

Having an issue with rich running, and with it being a computer controlled carb, I'm reluctant to start messing with it.

Does anyone know of a specialist in the UK that knows the computer carbs specifically?

We had someone on the CCCUK website with an '80 Vette with a similar issue and extremely rich mixture - that had an electronic carb too. We reckoned that Ethanol might have had a part to play. Suggested that he buys himself a pukka car re-build kit for his specific vehicle - they ain't so difficult to install - haven't heard how he has got on.....

I had wondered about ethanol.. The car was in storage in Texas for about 10 years, the dealer I bought it from claim to have done a rebuild and overhaul of the carb already.

It's fine from cold, only when up to temperature does it start to run rich.

I suspect it may be one of the many sensors/vacuum systems at fault.

I'm not terribly mechanically minded and would rather someone who knows what they're doing had a look. But I'm willing to start digging myself if need be.

As you say a sensor seems to be the likely culprit - can't help there. Suggest you trawl the 'net' for potential answers.

Get in touch with Robin Gray at AutoPontiac - He specialises in rebuilding Quadrajets and is the go to guy for servicing and fixing them.

He's based in Hounslow, London - but give him a shout and I'm sure he'll be able to sort you out!

Just a follow up, I've been speaking with Robin and I'll be getting the car down to him as soon as he's got availablity. Thanks for the heads up, he sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

I hope you get this sorted soon Roadtoad - I think there's always a bit of fettling to be done when you get a car (and for years after...) but sounds like you'll be out cruising soon.

Cheers pal, it's been a bit of a ballache all the way! I can't imagine I'll be using the car much at this end of the year, so happy for it to be going to get some professional attention
