RockAuto shipping costs
Discussion
I've always been a big advocate of RockAuto. Have used them dozens of times, and always been blown away by their customer service.
After my Raptor began making grinding noises this morning, I logged in and ordered a set of front pads. As always, there was a huge choice, from budget to premium, ranging from £15-£50. Made my choice and went to calculate the shipping costs. Now, I know it's not cheap, but it generally works out a little cheaper than UK sourced items, even with the duty added. But today?
£150! Shipping cost alone. For a set of £40 pads. I don't know if this is a one-off anomaly, or now the norm. Anyone else had a similar experience?
Thank God for USAutomotive. Heavy duty front AND rear for £120 delivered tomorrow.
Guess who'll be getting my custom from now on...

Yep!
Before lockdown I was going to order
A pair of rechromed bumpers for my challenger, in March price about 600
Delivered , for various reasons this didn't happen,
A month back I went to order them
and the postage costs were 1500 quid alone !!!
So yeah things have really changed!
And doing restoration work involving body panels the cost are huge now !
Enjoy

I usually get a list of items together order 7 or 8 items at once - during lock-down I only wanted a OEM HD starter motor but the shipping was crazy. Ended buying from Woolferace - few weeks after that a Holley 'jiffy kit and that was 'stupid' prices - I'm told it due to reduced air transport hiking prices....

Covid. Reduction in air travel. Shipping costs have sky rocketed
Absolutely bang-on correct. My company air-freights medium/heavy palletized equipment (250-400kg typically) from UK and Holland into the US. Since covid, a typical air-freight component (so not including anything other than the transatlantic bit) went from an average $650 to a quite difficult $2200 per shipment - and that persists. A lot of our gear was coming over in the cargo holds of passenger flights - no consumer traffic = horrifyingly inflated freight costs. All that said, some parts suppliers do mark-up their shipping costs. I've done this for a few folks on here - but if you need reasonably sized service items, I'm more than happy to package and ship bits and pieces, if it helps. Brake pads would be a snip - body panels and short motors, not so much.

Bit of a thread resurrection, but are people still finding the shipping costs a bit mad or back to normal?
I'm planning to order a Curt towbar with a 1 1/4" receiver hitch... Parts cost £145, shipping cost £185, plus VAT on the whole lot (can't blame Rock or FedEx for that!) making it about £400 delivered. Obviously that's a pretty chunky heavy bit of steel rather than something small and light, I've never ordered something this heavy from the US before so I don't know if that's a normal (pre-COVID) sort of shipping cost for something like this.
I'll have to suck it up if I want the hitch, but it's less galling if I know that's just what it's always cost!

I can understand using rock auto for specific parts and rare stuff but surely you could get a set of brake pads in the UK? I use https://www.myus.com/ for all but the largest items. Open an account, have parts sent to 'your' Florida address (taking advantage of free in country shipping in many cases), myus bundle it together in one package and ship it to your door. It's saved me a lot of money over the last few years, the only exception was a pair of seats which were large and heavy, an expensive mistake. However, wheels, leaf springs, arbs, flywheel etc. were all good value when compared to what Ecklers/Zip/Mid America wanted for shipping to the UK.
As others have found, Rockauto can be well priced, it just depends on the item.
Ebay.com are usually pretty good for small parts via their international shipping programme.

Being new to the scene, Rock Auto trend to be my go to, and I'm generally pleased with their prices and delivery time.
I did get a bit miffed when I recently ordered a blower motor and resistor from them though.
At check out, they stated that both parts were coming from different warehouses and charged me separate shipping and handling. Yet both parts arrived together in the same box.
Overall shipping cost was £30, on £20 of parts.
I guess that's just the price to pay for getting stuff sent over.
Are there any good stockists for consumables in the UK/Europe for future reference?
