Just curious thinking its time for a vacation and maybe a new truck anyone gone as a tourist bought insured and used a
car for a road trip then dropped it off with a shipper for export to the UK at the end of the holiday ... oh and what state would be
the easiest to get insured and registered / temporary tags ?? thanks ...

Plenty of people do it, I'm not one of them though so can't recommend anything. Try asking on one of the Facebook groups, there's alot more people frequent them than here. Having an address to use is probably the hardest part unless you have friends / relatives over there...

Pretty much none of them.

You will find it virtually impossible to insure a vehicle in the US without a US drivers license and for that you need proof of residence.

I had a mate come over last year for a holiday and couldn't add him temporarily to my insurance as he only had a UK license. (Texas)

Same for vehicle registration.

California is about the last of the states that will dish out a drivers license to illegal immigrants so that might be your best bet.

As Rob said, having a friend/relative to help you get it to the docks is what you need.

I was able to temporarily add a visitor from UK to my policy (Travellers) - they didn't charge me any extra either!
I'm in FL.

I really want to do this too.

When I retire, I can get £260k lump sum and want to drive across the states in a V8 Mustang (or other such) but hiring daft when cars are reasonable (with the chance I could ship it if I grow to love it)

but its really difficult.

One of our children has an american girlfriend so we are hoping they will get married and live there for a while smile

Did wonder if you could get a car in Canada then drive into the states ?

Or would Ford do a UK mustang with Factory pickup option ?

byebye I did a lot of research on which States to avoid (but have mostly forgotten it all now). The biggest help was googling non-US people who have bought RV's/Motorhomes for travelling the States for months on end. They were useful in saying which States to avoid. In my case I made life potentially easier by removing the car from the country in a relatively short time. If you are planning a month long trip for example then registration in your name is probably necessary.
Buying the car and driving it across the States to the port was the best adventure and experience my wife and I have ever had.

Be careful with the State you choose.
Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and certain areas of California and Texas would be best, as we have almost no rain and hence no rust. East coast and especially Canada saturate their roads with salt.
My mum lived in Ottawa and bought a brand new Dodge Neon a few years back (I tried to talk her out of it), and within two years the bottom foot of the doors were rusted out.
