I was behind an American car (plates) today and can’t believe that’s legal?

It was also an odd car to import as it was a Buick cascada- Vauxhall cascada.

Seemed odd.

In Surrey.

May have been US serviceman, see a few around Lakenheath. Plates aside I always think US cars look horribly out of place outside the US, just stylistically not quite right.

Nothing more or less illegal about it than any other foreign car on UK roads

I’m obviously naive!

I just thought there would be huge amounts of red tape and hurdles to bring a us car over to the uk especially from outside the eu.

Throw in fact it’s a Vauxhall cascada someone has gone to that effort it was just a bit odd.

But yes, you are all correct I see it is legal to to for 6 months.

I have done this into Europe and it is complex. Normally I do factory pickup for a new car in Germany but sometimes its not possible. Am shipping a car Toronto- Frankfurt this summer for a few weeks running.
Pic below is when I was in Berlin in 2008, running on Ontario ( Canada) plates.....

You have to prove you have had the car for more than six months., provide the original documentation, arrange for shipping, get transit insurance, get road insurance when you are in the destination country, and then get stoped periodically because the police can't really understand the plates.

There was an old Hyundai Sonata in my village on California plates I used to see drive around all the time, it was the older model with the long boot, sort of like an old Jag, it didn’t make sense, very attractive blonde lady driving it and used to see it outside a private school up my road during the school run, why didn’t they just buy a car here?! Could have bought the same car for less (Guessing 2-3 grand?) than the price it would have cost to bring it here

US service personnel used to get their cars shipped for free, I assume that they still do, then they have 6 months before the car must be registered in the UK. See quite a few in East Anglia still.

Seen a few on the A419 in Wilts, a few US bases in area and up the M4

Made me laugh seeing a Texan reg'd pickup on a drizzly day in Swindon!

Was that a Dodge Ram by any chance? Seen it a couple times down Thamesdown Drive.
