Mopar/Getrag LSD
Discussion
Got a bit of a nasty shock today. I noticed that my 2015 Scat Pack Challenger had started emitting a strange groaning noise from the back end when making slow turns (parking maneuvers), particularly with the steering on full lock.
It wasn't obvious where the noise was coming from, but it concerned me because the car has a bit of a bi-polar life. During the week my wife gently commutes with it - and at the weekend I thrash the knackers off it, both on the street and at the drag strip (maybe once every 8 weeks or so). The back end of the car is stock, except for Strange Engineering chro/moly axle-shafts.
It turns out that the differential is buggered - but not due to anything I've subjected it to. It has the incorrect grade of hypoid installed at the factory - and this is more of an issue than I was aware. Thankfully my drivetrain warranty covers the replacement of this unit.
It occurred to me that there may be a few Scat Pack/SRT392/Hellcat Charger/Challenger owners in UK/Europe who may not get as sympathetic a reaction from their supplier/dealer if they experience similar Getrag LSD issues.
Might be an idea to make sure your car has LSD appropriate hypoid oil in your diff - before it starts grumbling.
