Our friend is looking to replace his tyre but should he worry before Saturday, think there was a mark on the tyre!

Im no tyre expert but personally I think that will be fine, from the photo it purely looks like its just taken the very outer skin off and not deep (ie no deeper than the writing on the tyre) the only issue could be if it had hit the kerb hard which as there is no obvious bad damage to the wheel I doubt this would be the case, I only say this would be an issue as it could have caused damage to the integrity of the side wall which could be a weakness, if it was my car I would not be bothered by it, if they are concerned then either keep speeds down or take it to a reputable tyre place (not your usual high street type) as they will no doubt say you need a new one ££

How did this damage happen?

If this was my car and also the fact it is on the inside I would replace it. Reason being it may look fine but the issue is if you do quite long drives the heat build up in the tyre can create an egg effect if you have damaged the internal sidewall of the tyre much like a hernia. You will see a small lump appear and then an egg and then finally it will pop. If it was on the outside you could keep an eye on it on the inside no chance.

Do you carry a spare incase the worst happens?

Thanks for your comments, bought car from dealer, all good, few months ago, but only because crossfire forum mentioned about fuel pipe problem and to remove the wheel, then noticed missing part of tyre, not blatting about and so local so hardly any miles, but thank you, will get looked at, but have to say another club member has an almost warm oilsmell from theirs, no leaking onto tarmac but there appears to be a drip type tray underneath the engine, even experienced small amount of white steam occasionally from closed bonnet, getting it booked in but any ideas ta

It could be that the car already had two wheels up on a kerb and then the driver has turned onto the kerb for some reason, pinching the inner sidewall in the process.

By the same token, the old cynic in Me wonders if that tyre used to be the other way round on the rim and the tyre was damaged against a kerb.

Then some unscrupulous person at some time has then had the tyre turned round on the rim so that the damage is on the inside where it is a lot harder to see. It would be hardly worth the effort but "there's nowt so queer as folk!" as they say!
