I'm doing the typical Vegas holiday for my 40th later this year and one of the things I plan to do is hire a classic car from LA and drive up to SF.

I've never driven a classic American car before so am not too sure what to hire or what to expect. The original plan was to hire a classic mustang but after mooching over various sites I'm quite taken to something like this

1968 Buick Lesabre

Any suggestions? Or can anyone recommend any good hire companies in LA? Also considering I'm used to the typical UK 5 door saloon, will something like this be difficult to drive? It looks huge!!

thanks

That looks mouth watering!

I don't think you'll have any problems if you drive like it should be driven, waft around in style. The cars from the 60s should be already quite easy and comfotable to drive. The roads and parking lots are much bigger over there, and the visibility out of these older cars is also better. Take it and enjoy the ride!

I had a 4 door 64 buick Lesabre, it was without doubt the most relaxing car i have ever owned. VERY wallowing on the bends so you drive accordingly and you will love it, on the motorway it would sit happlily all day at 75-80 and the big bench seats are like sitting on a sofa not in a car. Enjoy.

Back in 1992 I rented a '72 Mustang V8 5.0 'vert from a company called Rent a Wreck on Pico Boulevard in LA. They specialized in 3 or 4 year old cheap rental cars but had a load of classics as well.

Not sure that they are still around but it was great driving through Hollywood and Beverley Hills in that old beast. I was a bit puzzled when I had to find a rare gas station serving 4* fuel to fill her up the next morning.

I walked round and round the car yet I could not find the filler cap.

A fella in a beautiful 60s Corvette pulled up and shouted "Hey Buddy! it's behind the licence plate" biggrin

Be sure to take in the Shelby Heritage Centre and Factory Tour, probably the best free petrolhead entertainment in LV :-

Just remember that cars of this era don't have steering wheels, they have direction estimators.
