I took my car to an Independent garage in Portsmouth to sort out a problem with the central locking. It turned out to be the receiver in the car as far as I understand from the mechanic. Anyway that has been replaced and everything now works. When I took the car to the garage it had around 60,000 miles on the clock. And wasn't due a service for several thousand miles. I noticed today that my car is showing that it has done 168,000 miles!!! and it is telling me to get the car serviced!! What the hell could have caused this? I would like some facts before I confront the garage. Is it possible that the garage has replaced the cars ECU with a 2nd hand one, showing this high mileage???
Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi mate
That does sound crazy . They might have had to reflash the pcm or maybe the body control module when working on the c/locking which might involve the cars security , then some how screwed up the odometer reading.
Used parts is a possibility .
Did you get a receipt ? and did they happen to record the mileage on it .
Maybe dig out any mot paper work you have which should have mileage details then go back and see what they say .
Cheers , hope you get it sorted mate.

Cheers mate, makes a change to have a problem with my normal car! The last MOT was in July of last year, reading 53,000 miles, so I would have had to do over 100,000 miles in a year, I only use the thing for dog walks, and the beach is 2 miles down the road! I spoke to the garage today, and the mechanic is going to phone me back, so far they recon that they only replaced the central locking/immobiliser module. It's times like this I wish I knew more about the workings of cars!

Sorry to say this, but the mileage has only returned to what it should be. A previous owner has more than likely reset it. This often causes a cental locking malfunction, which is cured by making it read as it should.

So are you saying its possible that I bought a clocked car originally?

Not only possible, probable. I've seen it a few times now.

Sorry to break the bad news.

If you dont mind me asking, whats your experience in this matter?

Its not the end of the world if it has been clocked, but i will get to the bottom of it and take whatever action necesary. I just need solid proof that it has been clocked.

That was going through my mind.

The adjusted mileage on the odo has been corrected to what's stored in the ECU.
