Hi
There is a guy who has sold a 74 camaro that had a 454 ci chevy engine in with new gearbox , sounded all nice but i never had time to look before buying, its now sold & what put me off was he said it was fast, but not sure on bhp , he said around 300 !!! This put me of as it had a few goodies with headers etc and thats not a lot of power, is that all they make from a 7400cc ??
I am really trying to get hold of a fast big block yank but not having any joy, want a 2 door anything dodge, chevy, ford, plymouth but if only making that sort of power think it will be bit slow as my little porker has 300 & quite light? I really like the sleeper look as look as powerful & fun (some nice burn outs would be cool!!) I have had a few camaros , dodge etc but looking for a real fast nice sounding one??? Any ideas???

Depends what year - even if its a lopo emissions low comp mid '70's engine the torque (at probably 400+ ft/lbs)will more than make up for the lack of advertised HP.

Hi.

I had a 454 with 8:1 compression and headers before I had it rebuilt - in a 68 Corvette. I ran that with a 274H cam in it and it flew. As ROSCO says, the torque is like the hand of God pushing you down the road - you can expect 500 ftlbs and fairly constant burnouts - you only need higher compression and better heads as you climb the rev band, and if you're doing that, you want to rebuild the bottom end with high quality parts as a "cooker" engine from the 70s is likely to throw a rod if you regularly subject it to 5000rpm plus.

James.

The BB motors are usually pretty lazy out the box but like any of the old motors are so tunable!

As stated above the torque figures can be pretty nuts but what ever the figures it's more important you get a good motor all round.

Any reason for wanting a big block rather than an angry small block?

They only got worse, there was on eBay an 80's 454ci Chevrolet SS truck that put out a measly 230hp...

The 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS is a high performance full size pickup that mated the C1500 standard two wheel drive cab with an absolutely killer 454ci 7.4 liter, eight cylinder engine(V-8), the 3 speed automatic transmission and a 3.73 rear axle ratio helped thrust the 454 beast under the hood, the engine(90 Model) produced a maximum of 230hp, 385 foot pounds of torque, All this power was pushed out to Goodyear tires on Special 454 SS rims. The interior comes equipped with a special plush Garnet Red cloth interior and high-back reclining sport bucket seats with a Center Console.

For example the stock L36 427 cu in engine in my '68 was 'factory' rated at 390 hp and (I think) 425 ft/lbs torque.
Take a 454 block, add a stroker kit (489 cu in), aftermarket heads, a mild cam, inlet, carb and headers and = a dyno'd 528 bhp @ 5800 rpm and 565 ft/lbs torque at 3850 rpm. With M21 4 speed and 3.08 rear end this will pull clean from 1200 rpm, yet exceed the national speed limit in first gear!

no not really just big block, i just want something fun ,sounds nice, must do nice burnouts and fast 1/4 mile, not really into over 100mph stuff and something that is driveable around town, i have had a few nice yanks but my dodge kept breaking down & st brakes so sold that. now i just want anything with a bit of fun, the camaro i lost sounded ideal but small block would be ok if powerful enough..Are chevy the best engine to go for??
cheers Ian

So you want a classic yank muscle (type) car that stops well, and sounds good and quick up to 100.... What kind of budget ?

I am not really into tuning myself , wany car done really as i would have to pay mechanic so would end up expensive, there is a couple i like on e bay now but to expensive, there is a nice sleeper chevy with great running gear but £19k !! my budget is £10K.

For 10k, you'll possibly get a 70's Camaro that might not have too much rust, but I would expect too much performance at that budget nowadays. It's very unlikely you'll get a properly fast one that's street legal and sorted for that money, and not a bucket of brown mess.

There are a few good cars about for £13k (some nice plymouths/ vettes etc) but not to bothered about body its running fast i want!
The one i lost with tuned big block, disc brakes, good speced gearbox/ / reliable/ mot, minimuim rust was £6k.so they are out there.but £10k is my max for a toy really.
