My brother has just bought a 71 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400, which has a few jobs that need to be sorted out.

The doors are a real pain to close, and you have to slam them shut! the door rubbers look to to be replacements and seem in good condition and fitted correctly. Is it possible some replacements are a better fit than others.

Also the car takes forever to fire up when cold, and for a 6.6 feels a bit flat when you put your foot down. The car has new plugs and leads, the air filter seems Ok too.

The last thing is, when the rear seat was removed we found what looks like a metal container on the back seat rest right in the middle of the car? We haven't got a clue with that one.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards John

The doors probably have worn hinges/pins, they tend to drop with age. The starting could be that it just needs a good service, checking the ignition timing, carb setup etc. I'd do this before you start exploring other avenues. With modern fuels you may need to have the distributor advance restricted in order to run more initial timing but the same total advance.
Can you post a pic of the part you've found?

It's some sort of charcoal canister or separator for the fuel system. Still have mine connected up but thread below has ins and outs of bypassing/removing

Above site is mainly for Camaros but don't mind the occasional Pontiac interloper wink
