I'm going to view a 2007 4x4 F150 and it being the first F150 I will potentially own, I'm not too sure of what are the common faults and what I should look out for/test prior to buying the truck?

I'm a very amateur mechanic so any information, however obvious, will be of use smile.

Assuming it is a 3v motor has it had a plug change? Recommended service for this is 100k if it's left until then there will be problems. There various "known" problems, cam phasers, 4wd hubs, window switches etc, but they are generally bullet proof if looked after. I've had mine for nearly 5 years & the only major problem has been the cats have broken up inside, causing a misfire. I changed the plugs at 30k & take them out once a year just to be safe.
The only reason I would sell it is to get an F350 as it's not big enough to pull the toy hauler we plan to buy.

Hope this doesn't cross the boundaries of PH posting etiquette, but I've a really nice 2006 F150 which I'll be selling to make way for a Raptor I've recently bought. PM if interested...

Or if you want possibly the highest spec AWD Harley version, supercharged & with lpg, well I'm looking at an F350 as soon as I get home after Christmas

Good luck with that! I started a thread on that very subject a few weeks ago, and there are very few about. Unless you chance your arm on a 6.0 Powerstroke, which I really wouldn't, having had one before.

I know what you mean, there's a 2007 King Ranch for sale with low mileage, the last of the 6.0l, they are supposed to have most of the issues fixed. In an ideal world I'd probably go for a 7.3 but I don't want something that's been to the moon & back, also want all the toys & the early ones don't seem to have them. I'm not in a rush as it's just part of my semi retirement plan to go travelling for 6 months of the year & work for the other 6 hopefully starting in the next couple of years.

I had the 7.3 in a dually a couple of years ago. It was an awesome motor, especially with an Edge tuner on it. But as you rightly say, most of the ones that pop up are high mileage. This wouldn't necessarily put me off. I never had a single issue with mine, but the trucks they're attached to are pretty basic.

Have a look on US eBay. One of the UK-based US dealers would be more than happy to do a deal on a later one for you. That's pretty much the route I took with my Raptor, given the limited number available over here.

What should I look for in terms of the cam phaser and where exactly is it located in a 5.4l F150 engine bay? Again, what to look for in terms of the 4wd hubs (e.g. does 4wd engange?)?

Is a HPI and Autocheck (or Carfax?) the only places to check for mileage?

Have a search on the American f150 forums. The phasers are on the camshafts, I think they rattle when failing, the IWE hubs stick when they go wrong so you are trying to drive the front wheels all the time. Don't be put off by these issues, for everyone that's had a problem there will be hundreds if not thousands that have had no issues, it's just that they don't post when things are good! If everything works as it should & it drives nicely you're halfway there.

Just got the VIN of the chap and an Autocheck showed it up as being involved in 2 accidents in the States before being auctioned by the insurance company and imported into the UK. Alhtough I'm not completely against the idea of driving a previously written off vehicle, I don't want any headaches as a result. Will getting it insured be harder/costlier?

I've pretty much decided it's a no-go, unless you guys can see any reason why I should still take a look at it? The price clearly reflects it's status, now that I know it.

Sounds like one to avoid !! However the American carfax reports give more information even on minor repairs and sevice
You would need to know what type of damage and see if the repairs have been done right,
Nice low mileage trucks with good history hold there value and aren't cheap in the states so getting one back at a reasonable price isn't easy ,so there is a strong temptation to buy high mileage or ones with dubious history
Personally salvage titles , flood damage etc is a no no .. High mileage wouldn't bother me as much if the price was right ...

Hi Rick, happy Christmas mate, still got it for now, I did advertise it for sale back in the summer but I'm not a people person when it comes to tyre kickers. Would rather it went through word of mouth. I heard you have some changes planned for yours.

Brave move, especially if you haven't got the patience (like me) for the inevitable hassle!

I put a 993 C2S on ebay many moons ago and managed to attract every duck head and their brother......having not learned my lesson a few years before putting an Audi TT in Top Marques (around 2001 when they were still a bit special) and attracting a psycho who wanted to pay about £10k for it and visited at midnight to 'sort me out'.....!

Car dealers earn their money in my opinion, the rudeness, phone calls at 10.30 pm on week nights etc etc.

What sort of figure would a serious punter need for this truck?

There is a similar one for sale by a dealer for £22950 + vat. Mine has the benefit of a top spec lpg conversion & I would be happy with a bit less than that, with no vat on mine.

Just drove a 2013 raptor in the US, drives like a car, but feels like a truck. Bouncy. Plastic interior and it has a bad habit of road spray on the door handles so you have to get crap all over your hand when opening the door.
Also the one I drove averaged 13.9 MPG over 10,000 miles. My brother in law's and he doesn't trash it either!
Does about 19mpg on the motorway.

That's pretty good on fuel considering that will be US gallons.
