Reasonable cost manual box for a 302
Discussion
Hi all,
Seeking to pick a few brains, I'm starting a new project = http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
And the plan is to source a Ford 302 with circa 300-350 Bhp. The original owner had planned to use a tremec tko600 but budget wise that is going to be a little tight for my bank balance
So with the experience of the group what other gearbox options are available, and yes, I've done all the searches and not found a concrete and firm answer on a plan b option
Thoughts?
Ps if anyone knows of a 302 that is for sale please ping me :-)

A T5 that the Tremec is based on should be cheaper, and relatively easy to source with a Ford bellhousing, and certainly cheaper than a TKO. Will be OK to 350bhp, depending on use..
Given the choice of T5's out in the market........it's, the detail I'm after........I.e. a T5 box from xyz car with xyz bell housing is what I'm after :-) gmw9666 said:

I have a brand spanking new 5 speed manual box (C/W bellhousing) that was intended for a '97 Mustang Cobra lying around somewhere. Can probably get some serial numbers etc from it if you think it'll fit.
thought the modular gearbox would not fit a 302?Best,

Glen,
How long do you want it to last? I wouldn't trust a used Borg Warner T5 from here to the toilet I want to throw it in. They have "composite" synchro rings, as I recall.
Tremec bought Borg Warner, and improved the product, in using metal synchros and, I believe, some bearings? Maybe it was even the input shaft bearing carrier. If you can find a Tremec built T5, it would be safe. After a while, they started marketing a "world class" T5, and I don't know if that was
The older version of the TKO series was the TR3550. I bought one (new), when my project was still wearing diapers, and I had a job that rewarded me with, among other things, money. The torque capacity of the TR-3550 is 425 ft lbs, and the TKO was rated to 525 ft lbs. Tremec built truck 'boxes, so remember that the capacity is factored against the load it has to propel. Down side is that the bellhousing hole, for the input shaft for either variant is larger than the T5, so no off the shelf parts. Lakewood scattershield is safer for a race car, any way.

As you need a 302 and a 5-speed box for a 302, it might be worth getting a late 80s Mustang and break it. That would give you the bits you need and leave you the rest of the parts to sell to get money back. You'd also know it all fits together. On the road late 'stangs can be picked up for £1500ish so you can road test it to see if there are serious issues before you buy. They come up quite often but you'd need to be quick when you see it, here's an example below:

Ford 302s have good parts interchange-ability (is that a word?) so converting a fuel injected engine to carb isn't impossible if you wanted to go that way.
Alternatively, for a 300HPish engine have you thought about a Real Steel crate motor? When you cost it all up it isn't usually any more expensive than rebuilding your engine to that spec. Certainly worth getting a Real Steel catalogue.
