WJ Grand Cherokee
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm looking at buying a Grand Cherokee around the 2000 - 20004 range as a third car. I really want the 4.7 v8 but a 4.0 I6 one has came up for sale, that does look clean with lowish mileage. I wont be doing any towing with it but I'm worried that it might be underpowered for the car and I would be driving along thinking I wish I got the 4.7 V8
I hear the 4.0 is pretty bullet proof the but the auto boxes are not very good and are known to fail around the 120k mark? where as the 4.7 V8 autobox is generally bulletproof but the engines are not as reliable as the 4.0.
Has anyone owned both? or know a bit more about them?
cheers.

I've owned both in that I had a normal Cherokee 4.0, and now run a 4.7 v8
Both are on LPG... The 4.0 I owed for 3 years, and sold it at just over 150k miles... Still running sweet and apart from a flat battery never let me down...
Had my current 4.7 for 7 years, and its now on 126k.... Its been used to tow heavy trailers, caravans, boats, and used offroad greenlanes etc... Again no problems apart from a gearbox sensor...
The 4.7 is better on fuel than the smaller engined one, but not by much... All in all a nice place to be for this type of car..
Mine is worth about £0.50p so I may as well run it until it breaks
A good mate has the overlander high output, its just done over 200k and is showing signs of not lasting much longer, again its on LPG but it now has some valve issues... Still running but not right..
All in all, for the money I think they're not bad... I'd rather have my Jeep than a discovery...

So would you get a 4.0 if the car was in good condition with low miles for the year, (80k) or just wait for a 4.7? I'm a huge fan of Land rovers and especially defenders but they are truly horrible cars to drive on the road. And I can not justify the price of them for a third car, MPG is not an issue for me. 4.7 with LPG. Don't know where you are, but this is in Worcs.
TBH, if i had the ££ right now, i'd have bought it instead of posting it.
