... The big names in the sale of US imports appearing to advertise a 'stock' of vehicles sold months ago?

Whenever I phone up about anything on the websites.......sold.

Three months later......still on the web!

I'm of the opinion that advertising the same vehicle long after it's gone or leaving it on the web as an 'example' doesn't help anyone trying to purchase.

Surely this makes a vehicle look overpriced/been hanging about because it's not desirable/difficult to sell etc?

Is it just me?

Whilst I wouldn't claim to know more about selling specialist cars than you.......I'm not sure what someone is looking for makes any odds to if -

Something is 'for sale' or 'sold'.

Possibly 'previously supplied' maybe a better description of some of the PH and Autotrader adds?

Just an observation not a criticism. I'm sure there is logic in there somewhere and do appreciate the tyre kicker element of car sales.

Personally if I were getting the finances together to buy a vehicle and was browsing what was available, if the same vehicle was on for months I would assume that nobody wanted similar stuff at that price. Which isn't the case if it's been sold for months!

Maybe I should have been clearer.

Are you talking about new vehicles or used?

Unlike main dealers over here who can borrow dozens of new vehicles from the manufacturers finance company in return for a small daily interest payment we have to pay for everything in full up to sixteen weeks before we've even got a chance to sell it.

This makes it impossible to hold stock on the off chance the exact colour and spec of Ram/F150/Mustang/Challenger/Suburban is what the customer wants.

Therefore 90% if new car stock is available to order.

Used car stock, as it's physically on the forecourt, is more up to date.

Unless you're looking at printed media adverts which always run two months late in real time purely due to print deadlines.

I don't think anyone is expecting you to hold a stock of different coloured Rams for example on the off chance someone wants a blue one! It's mainly secondhand adverts but new too with 'just in' alongside the add.

I guess I might be a bit naive but when I see something advertised as 'for sale' rather than 'available to order' I'd expect it to be in the showroom. I'm talking internet search, ebay. auto trader and PH classified.

The single hardest thing when buying something rare secondhand is working out what it's worth. If for example I see the same vehicle on for months at the same price (not realising it's actually sold etc), I'm only reaching one conclusion - too expensive and nobody wants it.

I'm not trying to tell you how to shift cars, just an observation on the thought process of one customer!

I think some do leave cars on to make themselves look
like a bigger business than they are and to generate interest ,
I think it can make things look overpriced however American
cars and trucks are specialist and low volume in the UK
So sitting a few months finding a buyer would seem quite normal

Our used stuff is pretty up to date and a lot of our new stuff will either say 'From £xxx, xxx' indicating what they can bought from or 'Available to order'.

I do know of one person who regularly leaves his used car adverts live.
