Hello
Looking at vans for my various crap I get upto, but, after sifting through pages of Volkswagens on ebay from the rusty hippy examples to the tarted up chavvy examples, I found something genuinely cool, a burnt orange Chevvy G20!, with the vertical side windows, but unfortunately with a set of hummer alloys, but they could always go back on ebay and some chevy radial steel wheels sourced! (sounds rubbish, but they're surprisingly deep and look period badass!).
Does anyone know if it's possible for my 20 year old self to insure a 1983 Chevvy G20 van?

If its any consolation, as a guy in the process of looking at daft stuff on ebay and contemplating the possibility of ownership, I can insure an S type R for £1800 a year, so it doesn't seem too far fetched.
I currently have 2 years No Claims, 3 years in a months time, and no convictions. (Touch wood to both of the above!). I'v been driving a 110 defender from day one, and various other things such as sprinter box vans, I even had a stint in a range rover sport and covered nearly 60K in my old Beemer.

So far no one, including Adrian flux, even E-mails me back. Obviously there's the combination of "20 years old" and "5.7 liter v8" to contend with, but surely a specialist will realise that albeit 5.7 liters, it's barely as powerful as a modern 2 litre diesel.

Im just wondering if anyone else has experience of insuring a younger person on an American import, or if anyone has any recommendations.
Cheers

Roo

None of the insurers of American vehicles will email you.

It's a specialised market. You need to ring them.

I've been with Adrian Flux on and off for over twenty years and are currently with them. They're very helpful when you talk to them.

My daughter (21) has just insured herself through Flux on her 1967 Chevy C10 327 V8 for around £900 I think so yes its possible but you will have to call them.

Alright, I was filling in the call back from thing on their website and taking no reply as a no chance. I'l go for a more direct approach here!
Then go and see if it's not rusted though underneath.

Your with a Chevy c10 sounds brilliant!, definitely a much cooler choice than the Japanese pick ups that young people are buying around here! and, it'l not blow up after the first 80k!.

Cheers for the replies, good to know that is is possible, I'l get on this soon!.

You will have to do the running round and ring up these days.

Things that aren't going to work in your favour, age, lack of LHD experience, most will try and sell you a classic policy which normally has a min age of 25, but a few out there will cover you.

Adrian Flux were offering me cover sub 25, as well as Graham Sykes and Classicline.

Yea it doesn't look good there, the woman at flux was speaking in monotone and didn't sound very enthusiastic when I was giving her these details. But she livened up when it came back at £1360 a year with full breakdown cover. Which really, to the older people on here will sound ridiculous, but now days for a youngster, it's about as good as it gets on anything!. Thats a whole £500 cheaper than for a 1.9 diesel T4 Volkswagen, and ,and without having a rant about all the pretend hippy doctors children iv came across that seem to have been bought them, I really couldn't bring my self to buy one of them!!
I am quite fortunate in living in the statistically lowest risk post code in the UK (DG10)

Cheers for your input, I'l give Graham Sykes and Classicline a call later.
Off to look at the Chevy on Sunday!

Crikey, 500notes cheaper insurance than a boggo VW for an intergalactically cool early 80s US van. Sounds like a no-brainer!

I definitely Agree!, Even in standard form, with the exception of a few components, it does essentially have the same engine as a C3 Corvette!. Which does make a bit of a mockery of the whole insurance industry.

Heres hoping it's not rusted through underneath, it does appear to have had lots of loving care and attention though.

It's considerably cooler, it's considerably cheaper to insure, It's burnt orange, it has a big v8 and you can drive around listening to 80's Americana like, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd etc in it. What else is there to like?

Not sure what you are going to do with it, but don't overlook the petrol costs.
I only ever once worked out the mpg after a steady m'way run at 65mph. 14.6mpg frown

Very true, but if you're a true yank / V8 fan, you find the money to fill it up and you disregard the mpg figures. wink
