Been watching several "HOT ROD" roadkill episodes recently,

and need a noisy v8 in my life- can an MOT'd american v8 that runs be bought for £1000?

if so, where is best to look?

I'm not fussed on make/model/era etc

suggestions welcome!

Unlikely.
Back in the 90s I bought an Australian Chrysler Valiant 5.2 V8 for £500 but it was hand-painted with a sweeping brush.
Around that same time I bought a 1981 Mustang Ghia for £500 but it was the 100hp 3.3 straight six with the skin off a rice pudding still on the rear bumper.

Even fairly crappy Yank cars with an MOT are worth money, even rusty ones.

The issue is that even crap ones are desirable for a V8 transplant. The 4s and 6s may fall well under £1k.

The one that might be under £1k is the Cadillac STS with the North Star V8 but that can have issues and they were very rare and front wheel drive.

80's Chrysler, 90's Cadillac, 90's Jeep you should manage to find all or at least one of these for sale at £1000 or under, you get what you pay for but there are still bargains out there. Try the usual suspects eBay, Rods N Sods, Car and Classic etc.

Fair comment- I know I want the moon on a stick, but Thats why I'm free regarding the type of car-all I want is a decent sized v8 to make some noisesmile

cheers- worst case would be the Jeep, I suppose

any particular models to look out for on the caddy/chrysler front?

The caddy with the northstar doesnt fit the bill as its FWDfrown

Thanks

That narrows it down a bit with you wanting RWD so count cheap Chrysler's out as the 80's LeBaron's are FWD. Ill have a think.

I've been looking for a cheap Yank V8 for ages but even a ten year old Crown Vic is three grand.

I can't see this ad in work but a 1984 5.0 TA produced all of 145hp. Noise...not an issue with the right pipes.
Performance is not going to be great though, they were about 8.5 seconds to 60 when new and pristine. The LG4 engine was also fairly untuneable without an expensive big new 4 barrel carb.

At under £1k, any TA is going to be a money pit.

frown It doesnt look the greatest thats for certain!

but it met the "MOT and v8 " criterion

looking more and more like a jeep v8 will be the best plan (in terms of getting a servicable car for the money

I need something that sounds oldskool- most german v8s (I've had an m60 e32 7series) are a bit too refined.. I like the idea of carb fed too, but as you say, there are many options out there.

I'm just after something that'd be rate noisysmile

Brief was a V8 Yank for under a grand with a test. It meets all those criteria.

Plenty of 4.7 GC's about some even with LPG. Reliable motors that are under appreciated. See where im going here.
