Can someone confirm this for me please?

Got back from my commute tonight to the station and found my 1999 Camaro had a flat. I got a lift home and phoned the AA - I have a spare set of wheels in the garage at home so I took one back to the station for the AA guy to fit. Which he did, really quickly of course...

Only when I got home tonight did I remember the spare set all have high speed rating tyres (I run regular ones normally - well normal for the Camaro anyway).

Am I right in thinking its a bad idea to run with a mix of speed ratings on the one car, never mind the same (front) axle?

Personally I wouldn`t have wasted the AA mans time but hey ho. Providing it`s only temporary and you drive `without enthusiasm` it shouldn`t matter. But if you plan to give it some stick now and then it makes sense to even things up. It`s like asking if you can wear two different shoes in a race.

Why don`t you just repair the the tyre or buy another the same?

Hey ho indeed... That pretty much confirmed what I thought, so thanks. The intention WAS to get the tyre repaired if poss - I just needed to know I was ok to tootle around in the Camaro in the meantime. All done now - local FastFit was less than a mile from the car park - valve had perished and there was bead leak. All fixed, new valve, refitted and balanced for 25 quid and all done in around half an hour. Pretty decent service and back to normal. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

A word for the AA too - arrived in less than an hour on a Friday evening, despite me being a bloke in a car park, not a woman stuck on a motorway or something. First time I've ever needed them, so all good.

For what it's worth, I ran my 79 Camaro on 4 mismatched tires during NY winters without a problem. I was young, poor and in university so didn't have a choice in the matter. I think unless you're doing high speed, hard braking driving you can get away with relatively poor rubber for a while even on rear wheel drive cars like the Camaro.

Good to know, thanks for that. Hopefully it'll never happen again but still good to know.
