Hi

I have an mr2 turbo as a second fun car on a classic policy, My idea is to sell it and get a V8 american car. Looking at about £2-4000max, something that will not go down in value, Is there somthing I should stay away from?

Second question is whats life like with an american car, what are the pitfalls (parts being obvious) but that else.

So suggest me a car, and give me your advice.

Having only owned one for about 9 months, I'm not hugely qualified to comment on what life is like with one, but they have been in the family for years. In my opinion, if you don't expect too much from them, then you'll be happy. Everyone goes on about shoddy build quality etc, but they're built to a budget, and that's just the way the Yanks want it.

Speaking for experience with third gens, they're good cars. Not very well refined, buckets of character and not too bad to work on. Parts are easy to come by with a lot of suppliers in the UK. The best thing is the V8 burble, and if you don't care about the fuel mileage (which you shouldn't) a V8 is the only way to go really.

The other good thing about third gens is that they're pretty well covered for resources. Someone, somewhere has uploaded a nugget of information that'll help you out. Either that or its covered in Haynes or Chilton manuals.

The only ones I'd stay away from are the ugly ones, or ones that weren't even popular in the states. If they're a one year model (some of the older cars are) body panels and molding maybe rocking horse st to get hold of.

Best advice, browse eBay > Motors > Others > Classic Car > American and have a look at whats on offer.

I think your budget narrows down the choice for you, pre 73 cars are easy to get parts for, all the running gear is shared with other models so is common. If you want modern muscle at a bargain price, it has to be a Camaro. I have a 1973 Buick that leaks when it rains, it creaks, groans and drinks petrol, it runs 13 second quarters and still makes me smile after 21 years owning it.

With £4k tops to spend your budget is somewhat limited but like your man above says "Don`t expect too much and you won`t be disappointed`. Bags of character. Ignore the squeaks and rattles at your budget and you`re good to go.

Theres a 3rd gen Chevrolet Camaro Z28 on ebay for 4 or offers. Bang for buck right there.
