Presumably they don't exist?

If not, why not??

Seeing as about 80% of the world drive left hand vehicles, why should Dodge make what would be considered a niche car even more expensive by tooling up for a very small market.

Likewise with other American cars. A large portion of sales are domestic and if they are exported, most countries (except Austrailia) will allow left hand drive vehicles.

To be perfectly honest, except when using say a ticket car park where you need one for entry, I don't see many draw backs with left hand drive. It definitely makes the experience of owning a yank far more unique.

actually wouldn't any Challenger sold in Oz be RHD? Converted for sure but RHD non-the-less?

Yep. And about £100,000 and unregisterable in the UK as it won't have FMVSS compliancy.

Because Yank muscle cars should be LHD. Anything else is for idiots.

yes

Why would anyone want a RHD American car?

Someone in the latest Mustang thread said they wanted a RHD version to be available. Where's the logic in that?

Thanks for the comments. I take the point about the car losing something unique/special if it was available in RHD.

I now have a stunning example as the background on my computer (white with grey bonnet stripes). What a beautiful shape the car is. Perhaps in a few months its desirability will wear off....perhaps not.

If I'm ever allowed (by the wife) or allowed (by the law) to import one I'll post on here nearer the time. If others feel the same perhaps we could consider a US trip to try out the car and arrange a group purchase. ok probably getting ahead of myself here but that purple car at the New York show just 'stopped me in my tracks'...nice when that happens!

Cheers.

Chris

Nothing legally stopping you from importing a stock LHD car.

To put some oil on the fire, I saw a grey with black stripes Challenger yesterday on the motorway to Luxemburg.

Once I get through my current car "niggles", I'll definitely start looking into one of these.

It usually costs about $25,000 to have one professionally converted to RHD, a huge part of that cost is dashboard fabrication which is not as easy or simple as you'd think. Oh and labor, I've been told half the coast is labor.

Plus the only people doing it who have experience are in Australia, and that's not exactly close by.

There's a company in California that does conversions on trucks and Suv's who was trying to get us to use them.

He refused to say how much the conversion would cost and how long it takes. Merely stating that his customers have the time and money to wait. Helpful.

He did have to admit though that the conversion invalidates FMVSS which means they'd be no good to me anyway.

i just sold my 2006 mustand and bought a 2009 SRT8 challenger as my daily runner, awesome car in my view and the whole left hand drive thing isnt an issue once you have been driving one for little while, when you have the power you take your time to get the right time to over take as thats the only time it can be an issue when wanting to overtake or pulling out of a junction as on the challenger there is a big blind spot due to the rear pillar, but for a 2 ton car they haule ass and are a lot of fun to drive, build quality is better than the mustang by miles in my view, the mustang is a beautiful car though but the challenger gets may more attention !

FMVSS has nothing to do with making it more difficult to register as a RHD. The IVA test is simply much more onerous for RHD's thanks to a deal struck when my old man represented GM in the SMMT. VOSA were trying to stamp down on Japanese imports so he lobbied for them to impose different tests for LHD and RHD vehicles.

We regularly IVA cars without any FMVSS label with no issues whatsoever.

That's interesting to hear Mitch.

How do you get around the lack of exemptions afforded to the car under FMVSS? Glass, lights etc.
