I woke up this morning with an itch to buy an American muscle car .from the late sixties/early seventies.
Basically, what are the differences between the Challenger and the Charger.
I've got a bit bogged down with the multitude of specifications each car had but can't really get to the bottom of what the difference between the 2 models was.
Can someone help a total novice please?

Challenger, rare, big, more desired, better style (imho).

Charger, more common, ran for more years than the Challenger. Several body styles, everyone thinks they're from Hazzard.

In all seriousness though, you will find you'll pay a premium for a Challenger over a Charger, not that Chargers are cheap either. I was brought up on Vanishing Point, so I'm well and truly in the Challenger camp when it comes to my favourite Mopar.

What do you reckon they'd want for a top car like this?

You know the saying, "if you have to ask"!! it was in the 65k region last time he advertised it with a price on it. Is it London motor museum?

Well I'm out!
Half of that then I'd be interested but it's just to much for an occasionalSunday car in my situation frown

Any excuse to post this picture of my 1972 Challenger . I owned this circa 1974 .
Drum brakes on all four wheels, 3 speed auto, 440 CID . A friend had a red 383 Charger which was a larger car in all dimensions and heavier. I never drove the Charger so cannot comment .

I added a double pumper Holley, headers, high stall torque converter , B&M gearbox, Konis . Suspension was a basic set up with front torsion bars and rear elliptical springs.
I part exchanged a Sunbeam Tiger for it .

You're a very lucky man.
Don't get to excited but I may be in touch.
At the moment it's only a dream but these things have a habit of snow-balling at our house!

If that was sale in the London Motor Museum it would have a ridiculous paint job, totally inappropriate wheels and be on sale for >£100,000. And no doubt be the best one in the world.

Sign up to the Mopar forum, you will get good advice there, I've had both B & E body cars, if you want something that goes around corners then go for a small block Challenger, they are a little bit cheaper to. If you wnat anything with a Hemi then you better get ready to sell your house!

Did you ever drag race that at Santa Pod or Blackbushe in the 70's?

Try Plymouth Cudas too. Not Mopar but just as much style. Mopars also rust like eveything else and parts are more expensive.

If you are seriously interested in Mopars then............
http://www.moparuk.com/

A fantastic wealth of knowledge and help. I would also guess that if you see a particular car someone on there will know about it or its history unless its a fresh import!

I joined to ask a question about yank ownership and A body mopars.........Still there nearly three years later and have made a lot of friends, a great bunch.

There is a joining fee (£25), but you get bi-monthly .pdf magazine and access to the whole forum (you can get access to some parts as a guest, just not all).

I've saved more than the fee in parts and advice this year alone.

As i said.........If your serious then i would make that forum your first stop.

There are also a mountain of US forums for each dedicated car, if you want general info!

Firstly, thank you to everyone who took the time to reply to my query.
One of tha advantages of being snowed in is that I've spent the entire weekend researching on the Internet, visiting Amazon and measuring garages etc.
It's made me realise that although my desire is strong there's a whole world of Mopar out there which I didn't even know existed and that I've only just scratched the surface of.if I'm honest.
One of main concerns at the moment is money. It seems to me that in my budget of 20-30k I can only really expect to find a car which has been heavily altered fom original (potentially not so much of a problem as I like to enjoy the car not buy it as an investment) and/or needs a lot of work and is riddled with rust,
My hearts set on a challenger at the moment though smile
