I don't think it ugly, I think it's American so people like saying it is. There have been many ugly American cars and this follows a tradition in the US, often seen on pickups etc of "stacked headlights".
If I had to compile a list or really ugly modern cars, this probably wouldn't be on it. The bumper has a touch of Nissan Juke to it and that thrives ion being "contentious" in the looks department.
At the end of the day, it's a 4x4 and certainly better looking than most BMW X wagons.
