I've been on this forum before with my strange fascination of late model Ford Crown Vics and I have seen another one close to me for sale.

Help me with my man maths biggrin My current E36 323i is great, I love it and have owned it since nearly new when bought in 1998 but it's just too small for me and my 3 kids and a real sod if I have to fit a 5th person in it.

So I need a bigger car with a much bigger boot with a similar thirst for petrol. My E36 does about 17 mpg for just running about town.

So the Crown Vic fits the bill and I'd imagine it would be cheaper to maintain than my Beemer so the final bit of maths, as the title says, being that they no longer make the Crown Vic, would you guys think that it might even gain in value over the years?

Ta.

There is a virtually infinite supply of them and lots of survivors. They will never, ever appreciiate unless you wait (say) 100 years. Not easy on gas but huge parts supply.

I have a 1954 Ford 4 door sedan in decent shape.

It's not worth anything.

You havent driven a BMW then??? you feel every bump , pot hole and expansion joint ,your ass will be num from the rock hard flat seats and people assume you are an agressive tt who only uses indicators to force into another lane, and never when turning right on a roundabout!!!... hehe

you would be better off buying a 1998 lincoln town car which has the same engine transmission etc if you can find one with lpg it would be even better the 4.6 engine and transmission is bullet proof i have had town cars that have done 4 hundred k miles and above on the same engine and tranny with lpg you would be getting close to 30 mpg parts are very cheap and in 5 years time you would be able to sell it for what you paid for it .

How a car drives is about handling. You are talking about comfort which is an entirely different thing. Sure if you like your cars like a 70 year old sofa but a Crown Vic. I have had a few as hire cars over the years and I certainly would never consider actually buying one.

I think you should just get it. You know you want to. And if you find it doesn't work out just get rid of it. At least then you'll know never to meet your idols.

Out of interest which one you looking at? The £3k one in redhill?

Not been to see it but it has been the nearest one advertised to my location. If he still has it I might have a look this weekend as I'll be traveling that way. Shame you can't hire them over here as that is maybe all I need biggrin

rented one in the states , was top of the range with leather and all the bits , was really pleased to get it but it was naff , slow poor handling plodder

all it had going for it was that it was reasonbly comfy to run around in , and i guess theyre built like a tank so should last if you look after it well

It depends what you pay. Older Yank cars, even boring ones, are always worth something. A friend had a 90s Pontiac Bonneville he paid £600 for and sold a year later for £600.

Doesn't look to dissimilar to my old one.

If you do get it rewire the offside reversing light as a fog light and do a rear bumper tuck on it.

Sorry no, but hey if you fancy a crown vic go for it better to regret buying something than to not buy and never know!! personaly it wouldent be my first choice I like my trucks but if you have a family its not a bad choice and you might want to go to a few shows they can be a great family weekend away if you like to camp, American car entusiasts dont always take themselves too seriouly .

A bit blingy but I think it adds to the bad taste vibe biggrin Looks in good nick too.

So what kind of mpg should I expect from one of these, especially if used on shorts hops around town?

Thanks for that.

A few shockers like 11mpg but a lot more 17 to 25s and some even claiming to be mostly city. Looked up my current car and there is hardly anyone getting below 20 like me biggrin

I had a 987 Boxster with a consumption computer which used to regularly show 11 to 13 on the 6 mile crawl into central London but overall I would get about 25. My old Disco 3 V6 diesel would only do 16 around town so I should be able to live with a reasonably modern Yank V8.
