its something ye olde ...will be safe and legal , but the dvla office is a fair trek in a unknown car , as im sure youre aware the mot doesnt check the drivetrain is reliable for a long ditance run , id be more comfortable trying a few local trip and checking for niggles as i go until its trust worthy

Vehicle inspections are completely random.
If you're not happy with driving it how is it going to pass an MOT?
If it is pre 1960 it won't need an MOT as of next month, although being as the liability for test is based on the date of first use as recorded on the V5 I have no idea how this will impact on imports, food for thought. If you're not happy with driving it how is it going to pass an MOT?
What Motorama said. I had to go through this with a Suzuki motorbike imported from the States. No I couldn't ride it there, even with an MOT. All they wanted to check were the frame and engine numbers and 5 mins later I was on my way back home. I offered photos of the numbers but they were insufficient evidence of the bike's history so there you go
