Vehicle inspections are completely random.

If you're not happy with driving it how is it going to pass an MOT?

its something ye olde ...will be safe and legal , but the dvla office is a fair trek in a unknown car , as im sure youre aware the mot doesnt check the drivetrain is reliable for a long ditance run , id be more comfortable trying a few local trip and checking for niggles as i go until its trust worthy

We had the dvla come out to us. We got a South African cortina pick up and they weren't to sure if it was the real deal and they came to the house for an inspection

If it is pre 1960 it won't need an MOT as of next month, although being as the liability for test is based on the date of first use as recorded on the V5 I have no idea how this will impact on imports, food for thought.

If the DVLA ask for an inspection the notification letter states the vehicle must be transported, not driven, to the DVLA office anyway

What Motorama said. I had to go through this with a Suzuki motorbike imported from the States. No I couldn't ride it there, even with an MOT. All they wanted to check were the frame and engine numbers and 5 mins later I was on my way back home. I offered photos of the numbers but they were insufficient evidence of the bike's history so there you go

right , are they checking the engine and chassis numbers match what i told them or what the american papers say

as the cars im looking at are 1950s its a fair chance theyd have a replacement fitted at some time

On the new stuff we bring in they can only check the VIN through the windscreen as there are no other numbers. Takes 30 seconds.

The inspections are carried out at your local licensing office.
