economy question
Discussion
Right i know this is silly but is a serious question non the less....
Asides from lpg could a good remap or a few mods make a pick up such as ford f150 more economical?
Ive been looking everywhere for one in my price range and just awaiting an email back to wether or not he has it.
And before you say; yes i can afford to run it im just seeing if i can do it cheaper?
Cheers

Depends on the drivetrain. In my experience the V6s are just as bad as the small V8s and it's a crappy engine. The newer EcoBoost ones do surprisingly well, using the cruise I can get 22 or so (US mpg) on the highway.
Yeh i was just looking at either the 5.7(?) Hemi, srt-10 or ford lightening smiffy180 said:

Economy? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!I've driven SRT 10 Rams before, using the cruise control and driving one gently on the highway 16-17 is a push. Lightnings are a little better. The 5.7 Hemis? I drive them all the time and they're not bad on the open road, they have cylinder deactivation if I remember correctly. Company I work for has a Dodge store and I play with this stuff on a frequent basis.
Last time I used a 5.7 Hemi Ram 1500 I was getting 19-21 on the highway. All these figures are US mpg.

Is that all hemi engines or just the new ones? I've driven SRT 10 Rams before, using the cruise control and driving one gently on the highway 16-17 is a push. Lightnings are a little better. Atm i have around circa 8k to play with but may have double that if all goes well just cant find much in the sub 8k bracket that i like "/
I was just coming on here to ask basically the same question.
I am looking at buying a Ram, 2005-6, and want to get the SRT, no doubt will end up with the 5.7 though, but am struggling to find out what the "real world" mpg would be on them. Normally this wouldn't bother me but I would be using it everyday so need to be slightly sensible about it.
I have been trying to find out what can be done with having it run on 2 different maps, one for economy and one for performance. Unfortunately I haven't found anyone that can do it on these as they say they don't have the software for them. I will keep looking though.
One other thing I wanted to find out is how hard is it to remove the hard cover if needed? Guessing it will be straight forward but will need to put the bikes in the back every so often.

A 2005-6 Ram won't have the MDS engine in it.
Expect mid teens around town and high teens to low twenties on a run.
SRT-10 is 8-10mpg round town and mid teens on a run.
They don't all have solid tonneau covers on them. If they do they can be taken off, but it's not something you'd want to be doing on a regular basis.

Thanks for the info. I would want one with a solid tonneau cover and it would only come off a handful of times a year.Expect mid teens around town and high teens to low twenties on a run.

Saleen is a better truck. Just make sure it's had the front hub bearings and cooling fans sorted out.
Not bad, id prefer srt10 if i could. Just dam insurance! I haven't even thought about insurance yet. I will just do my usual of buy it then sort insurance out.

I do like the Saleen truck. It is actually my desktop wallpaper at the minute. I did think about going to look at the white one that is advertised on here.

Its alright when your older, you can do that. However at 20 its not quite as easy I haven't even thought about insurance yet. I will just do my usual of buy it then sort insurance out.
I drive a 2004 Ram 5.7. Daily around town I get about 10 USmpg. Generally over a tank it is about 12.5. more long journeys see it rise up to about 15USmpg.
How many bikes or what size do you need to get in the back. Mine has a solid cover on the bed and I can just slide my 19inch frame wide handlebar bike in there with the lid still on. Could easily do 2 or 3 just taking the front wheels off.

I have always been a just do it and deal with the fallout afterwards type of person. I have wasted a lot of money on insurance through wanting things now. When I was 19 I bought a Sapphire Cosworth then sorted the insurance out. Needless to say it was expensive!RB Will said:

I was hoping to get about 15UKmpg overall seen as I don't really go into town just up and down the motorway. How many bikes or what size do you need to get in the back. Suppose I should of been a bit clearer on that. It would be 2 motocross bikes and occasionally take a race bike to a track day.
