They're good value against Camaros of similar years which seem to be more money for basically the same car.. (until late 70's Bandit styleee Trans Ams)

It's a stunner but these are not known for build quality and do suffer from the dreaded tin worm.

far better than a mustang (which also suffers badly from tinworm!)
I have owned about 10 of them over the last 20 years and would buy a bullnose now if the prices haddnt gone up to what I feel is too much - possibly only because the last very nice 4 speed manual car I sold went for £3500 and i used to be able to buy nice enough cars for between 1k and 3k back then and just cant help valuing them the same..

Sounds like me: I sold my 455HO Trans Am years ago for £3500. A couple of years ago I looked at one for sale and the guy wanted £35k. I nearly cried with laughter. 2 years later it's still for sale.

No it isn't the one on the Pontiac Club site for £40k, that one really is amazing. The "35k" car is actually a dog though I'd think about giving £15k or so for it.

Trouble is, and no offence to those that have these cars up for that kind of money, but for the same dough you can buy a C6 Z06: 505bhp (real bhp, not the made up horsepower you always see in adverts), 200mph, 0-60 under 4 sec, 30mpg on a gentle motorway cruise, total reliability.

Anyway the car discussed here is 12 grand or so. I think a bullnose with a sound body could be a good buy for that money.

For their time they were a great driving car and look fantastic. Trouble for me is that nice though a Formula is, the Trans Am really is the one...

You're comparing comparing Apples & oranges there. For the same money you could have a Diesel Peugeot 308. smile

Be curious to see what's it's like for the money.. Check good and proper underneath for rust, condition of floors, bushes etc..

Well yes and no, what I'm saying is that for £30+ k a bullnose Trans Am has had its day when for the same money you can buy a US car that is infinitely faster and you can actually use it without going bankrupt. Ever tried to drive a car a couple of hundred miles when it does 8-10 mpg and <5mpg when you boot it?

You soon just get tired of it...

a 70's trans am was the first car I ever owned that took over £100 to fill the tank, and that was 20 years ago...

£100 to fill the tank @ 1992? - I call Bcensoredt!

Either you had a massive non-standard tank fitted or you were still pumping in fuel whilst it was spilling all over the forecourt!

Early 70's Trans Am fuel tanks hold @ 18 US gallons (@ 15 UK gallons)
Late 70's Trans Am fuel tanks hold @ 21 US gallons (@ 17.4 UK gallons)

The price of petrol in '92 was @ £1.83 per UK gallon (according to this site: http://www.speedlimit.org.uk/petrolprices.html )

15 gallons x £1.83 = £27.45
17.4 gallons x £1.83 = £31.84

There's no way you could get £100's worth of fuel in a 70's Trans Am fuel tank back in '92!

As further proof, I owned a '77 Trans Am back in '92 (REG: VMD 441S), and I remember that the tank would take @ £28 to brim the tank from almost empty.
(I used to have to fill the bloody thing twice a week back then! - I did love that car though! [Damn you Burt Reynolds!] ).

Oh, and if you don't believe I owned one, here are the DVLA details :

Not really possible. Much as my 455 destroyed fuel it only had a 14 gallon tank so even now the old T/A would only take £90 or less. 20 years ago I'd imagine fuel was about a third what it is now?

Edit: whoops sorry didn't see the post above.

I do remember my 78 T/A was mentally better on fuel than my 71 455H/O. The '71 was about 25 times as fast though. My '78 was near stock and to be honest, bloody slow...

hmm, maybe it was my suburban then, but I do remember filling up in a small service station in the middle of no where travelling away from Ipswitch on a run from newastle to London to Ipswitch and back.. I know the price was astonomical to fill the tank..was definately at the very least 16 years ago - memory says it was over £100, but memory has been wrong before.

  • EDIT
i do apologise, just spoke to someone who was in the car with me - it cost £100 for the whole trip!! DOH!! getmecoat

I eventually got fed up of people asking Me: "What does it do to the gallon mate?", and so worked it out one day. Turned out I was getting 9mpg around town and 14 mpg on a decent run!

On a trip over to see My dad one Sunday, I decided to open her up a bit - and got scared watching how fast the fuel gauge was moving towards empty!

(How did Bandit manage his whole trip with just one fuel stop? scratchchin )

And when I went to tax it at the Post Office, the guy behind the counter told Me that I'd written the form out incorrectly!:

Me: "Really?, Which bits wrong?"

'You've put the engine size down as 6600cc's instead of 1600cc's!'

Me: "No, it's 6600cc engine, 6.6 litres!"

'I don't think it is!, cars don't come with engines that size!'

Me: "They do if it's an American car! It's a Pontiac Trans Am!"

'Oh!, bet that drinks petrol!'

Me: smilerolleyes
