On my Dodge Magnum I used the front fog lights as side lights and used the fog light wiring for the rear fog, a red bulb in the offside reverse lamp. This passed the SVA okay(even though the ECU turns off the fog on high beam).

Would this arrangement still be okay for an IVA? Thanks.

If the rear fog light did not used to be a brake light it needs to be an 'e' marked lamp unit.

It also needs to have a clearly marked, and illuminated, 'rear fog' switch.

There's also different criteria over when it's allowed to work in relation to which lights are on at the time.

Thanks Roo.
So I can use the fogs as sides without lowering the wattage of the bulbs and the fog lamp switch logo would have to be changed?

One more question am I right in thinking that the rear fog should work with:

Front fog, if fitted.
Dipped beam.
High beam.

Thanks for the help.

Must work with dipped and main.

Can only work with sidelights if front fog lights are also on. So if front fogs are turned off the rear one must also go off. We never bother wiring them like that. We just make the rear operational on dip and main only.

Also, don't get caught out if the car has automatic lights. The same rules still aplly.

Just something to bear in mind, you may have to change the switch (or at least the symbol on the switch) - my dad used a front fog lamp switch for his interior lights as he had no front fog lights and he failed IVA for having an incorrectly labelled switch.

That's a bit harsh

There were some very picky things on his fail sheet, and some not-so-picky. He just took the list away with him and cracked on with it. Along with the switch labelling, my joint favourite fail was the front indicator plastic housings having "sharp" ridges on them. They were on there so you could unscrew them to change the bulbs!

We buy etched/illuminated rear fog light switches from kit car builder solutions. Perfect for the job.
