I have found a car for sale that I am very interested in but after a chat with the owner it transpires the car has no V5, i am yet to ascertain wether the car has ever had a V5 here or if it's just that the owner has not sent off the new keepers suppliments yet.

if it is the former and the car has not been registered here how the devil do I get it registered ? Lots of DVLA hoop jumping and money giving i suppose ?

I am also having a good check of Vin Numbers etc to try and find out as much as I can about its history, it looks to be a fairly recent import, certainly within the last few years and is a project car that is not complete.

I cannot simply do a HPi check on it because I don't know the reg no or even if it has one so this is new territory for me.

Getting it registered will depend on what it is and how old it is.

Under ten years old will need IVA testing. If it's between three and ten years old it will also need an MOT.

More than ten years old it needs an MOT only. It will obviously need to meet UK lighting regulations in all cases.

To register it you'll also need proof of ownership, i.e. US title and customes and excise forms.

further questioning has revealed that it has customs certification and other paperwork from when it was brought in from the US.

It has never been completed so has never had an MOT.

It is a 1960s car so age is over the 10 years by a comfy margin.

Right now there are no lights...

I am starting with a bit of a blank canvas in that respect.

I cant say for newer models but for older classics, If it has a title, all duties are paid and it isn't radically altered from stock, then you just need to ins and mot it and then you can register it.

Come on then...spill the beans... what is it??

Depending on the date of first use, or possibly date of manufacture, you may not even need to worry about meeting modern vehicle MOT standards and could just put it back to what it originally was. For instance, anything 1965 (and earlier) is okay with red indicators and there's a similar date (might be the same one) that determines if the seatbelts must restrain your upper torso - i.e. lap belts will be fine (for MOT purposes that is) if it's old enough.

I will spill the beans later once I have actually seen the beast.

There is so much excitement building in me I might explode though.
