Firstly, sorry if this has been covered previously, but I did do a search but couldn't find an answer.

Basically, I've had an itch for a 50's Chevy/Ford pick up for a few years now. I've seen a few tat I had considered buying, one I even put a deposit on, but backed out at the last minute as I wasn't 100% with the info I had received.

Basically, what I need to know is, I've seen a few that have a later 80's/90's Chevy S-10 chassis with the older 50's body on top. The one I put the deposit on was a '52 body with an '89 S-10 chassis.

What would happen if I were to register it? Would they register it as an '89 due to the chassis, or a '52 due to the body? Would it be tax exempt or not?

Either way, I won't be buying the one I had the deposit on now anyway as circumstances have changed somewhat, so have lost the deposit, but I would rather lose a few hundred quid than end up with a worthless truck that wouldn't be tax exempt and have to do more extensive modifications to meet 80's era import MOT regulations as opposed to the relatively small amount of mods needed for a 50's car/truck.

In the next few months I will probably change my car and have gave these some serious thought.

I would guess it depends on what is on the title if its down as a 1950 whatever then that is what they will use for uk reg, I would avoid anything without a US title and the customs form to say the tax & duty has been paid!!! it make things alot easyer...

Ahh right, that clears it up then.

The ones I have seen have all had a clear US title and the C86? Customs forms.

Thanks.

No it doesn't. Not even close to clearing it up.
Have a gander/search/post on Rods n Sods or the NSRA, there are some very informed people regarding true legitimacy of a vehicle to be registered as historic and registraction issues.

Tread carefully along this route until you have satisfied (read informed) yourself that you're not going to get kippered.

Funny enough, I was talking to a bloke at a monthly American/classic car meet last night who had imported and restored a 1949 Chevy 3100 pickup, he gave me some very good info about the way to go about it, also to basically avoid anything with a new/non standard chassis. From what he told me, it would be better to import a pre 1950 truck myself that was in original condition, after doing some quick research regarding import duty, shipping costs etc, it looks like I could save a few thousand by doing it all myself.

I registered on R&S so will ask on there.

I'm guessing that's the thought behind a 50's truck with just the front clip changed to a F- body or Mustang, so you get the brakes, steering suspension engine mounts etc, but the chassis stays original for registration and 'legal' description...
